High Tech Turbo?

Got all my stuff

I am looking to install a complete exhaust system and I have tried to read as much as I can but I am still wondering which system to get.

I changed the muffler already and do not like the results I got... . too quiet and no rumble... ..... I want something that has some sound to it but not overly loud that you cant carry a conversation or listen to radio.

Their are so many systems I dont want to buy something and not be happy with it.

Thanks

JIM

I am loving the 5" Big Exhaust kit I put on my truck about a month ago. I did get the kit with the muffler (donaldson) and put it in, the sound it perfect. In the cab it's maybe a hair quiter than stock but at the pipe its got that deep down "big rig" sound. I think when I drive by the Class 8's they get a little jealous of the tone. :D

I've got Rips 5" system straight piped. Windows up or down you can hear the radio or have a conversation... just gotta talk a little louder. :D

I had a donaldson on my powerstroker, and I was very happy with it. They make the big truck mufflers. You could drop a tennis ball through it too.

I don't think a 5" would fit my 2002 3500 ETC. My 4" only has 1/4" between the down pipe and tunnel and 1/4" between the transmission and down pipe.

5" sounds neat, but measure twice, not sure 5" is going to fit everywhere.

JEly & Blownaway,

At the moment that is the $64 question. Seems that almost any 4" system gets obnoxious at 1900-2000 rpms on the '03s & '04s. It seems to be the nature of the beast, it seems that all brands get obnoxious in this range and the 5" are even louder. I've tried the old band clamp and angle iron thing, but the resonance persists. I've tried more hangers. I talked to Ken Jones last week and he has tried 5 different brands and they are all pretty much the same. Iwas going to add another muffler, but he told me he had tried that also ... and it didn't work. A 4" really helps with the EGTs when towing, but it is under a load when towing the exhaust becomes almost untenable. So, to answer your question, there is no answer. I'm living with what I've got until someone finds something better as I can't afford to buy another exhaust that I'm not going to like. If you do a search on the 3G forum there are alot of threads on the subject.

Are you saying that the noise unbearable while towing? Man I hope not. I can live with EGT's the way they are I was hoping for better spool up and maybe a tad bit more mileage, but if the noise is too loud forget it, the truck is already too loud. Please explain if the noise is louder in the cab or not?

Ron,

Yes, in a hard pull under heavily loaded conditions it can be deafening. You must understand this is 2003-4 models, they seem to have their own pecualairities. At 1900-2000 rpms it is MUCH louder than my straight piped '01.

E Wagener,

Two mufflers help, but doesn't eliminate the resonance.

Sorry Fireman I did't see it was a 2003-4. I know that Vaughn Mckinzy (sp) did some things to take care of his 2003 in that way.

Sorry, didn't realize we were discussing third generation trucks.

How about the 4" on a second generation truck?

HOG

I have a stainless steel HOG performance exhaust installed -- it is a 4" turbo back system with a 6" polished tip. I purchased the system with the "standard" muffler. They make one that is quieter called the "Augmentor"... they also make one that is louder than the standard. I enjoy mine... . but it does roar at heavy acceleration. Under cruise speeds... it's a low growl which I really like. If I had to do it again though... . I think I'd get the Augmentor muffler.
