Hi everyone,

I am going to order gauges for my truck (Pyro, Trans. Temp. , & Boost). My question is which ones?? I read the article in the TDR from issue 34 on the different brands and I like the Di-Pricol from Geno's.

Anyone have these and are you happy with them? I am going to install them in the A-Pillar mount.

I have a $1000. 00 to upgrade my truck and this is the start. Any other suggestions would help also. Have been thinking about the following:

1) Air Bags (I pull a 5th wheel).

2) Rancho 9000 shocks.

3) 4" Exhaust.

4) Mag-Hytec Transmission Pan.

5) RV Injectors

This is a limited initial budget, but it is a start!!

Any help & input would be greatly apprieciated.

Scott

Scott,

I see by your profile that you have a 24-valve truck. You need a fuel pressure gauge more than you need a transmission temperature gauge. Or maybe more than you need a boost or EGT gauge.

I have Di-Pricol gauges on the A-pillar on my truck and I like them. My main gripe is that the face is lighted but the needle is not, so at night it's hard to read exactly where the needle is. The black face with orange needle matches the factory gauges very well.

If you do decide to get a fuel pressure gauge, which I strongly recommend, buy the new 30 psi gauge. I have the older 60 psi gauge and it never reads over 20. I wanted a 30 psi gauge, but they didn't make one a year ago. Nobody else made exactly what I wanted either.

I recently bought Dipricol gauges for christmas. I got pyro, boost, and fuel pressure gauges. I like the look and the visibility and the smooth operation of the gauges. I have however had problems. The pyrometer fogs up. Andy at Genos tells me that over time the heat from the bulb will burn what little moisture is in there out but it's been over two months now and it's still doing it. My main complaint however has been that I still don't have an operating fuel pressure gauge. It came with an isolator that leaked. It seems that their were a bunch of us that got bad ones. I know of four others here in the Pacific Northwest that are still waiting for our replacements. The good news is that I never got any diesel in my cab and Genos has been pretty decent to work with. My patience is wearing thin though. AC

Why is a fuel pressure guage so much more important? I was lead to believe that a Trans. Temp. , Pyro & Boost gauge set was the way to go.

If the Fuel Pressure guage is so important then which one should I drop off? I only want 3 gauges to install and not have them lined up along my dash board. So I am going with the 3 most important ones to have.

You are raising more questions then answers here!

Thanks for the input!

Your truck, bieng a 24 valve, has a known weakness, the lift pump. The problem, is the lift pump fails, without your knowing it. The truck usually still runs fine with the dead lift pump. The bigger problem is that the dead lift pump will kill your injection pump after awhile. The lift pump costs about 150 dollars, so it's not that big of a deal. If you run it dead long enough to take out your injection pump, you're looking at a 1200 + dollar repair. If you have a fuel pressure guage, you will know if your lift pump fails, and you can replace it before any damage occurs to your injection pump.

Sorry guys but back to the top.

Still need help and info on why a fuel pressure gauge and which other one should I drop!

Dipricol

The basic three would be a Fuel pressure gauge, pyro, and boost. These are important dinostic tools to determine what may be going wrong, and help to establish a base line readings for future engine up-grades. I would recommend the Dipriol mechanical gauges, and can be purchased from Ken Jones at Diesel Dynamics of Utah #801-791-2328. He is very reasonable in pricing and all guages come complete with everything you need to put together.

Does anyone know if the the lift pump issue is a problem on the 03's? Just curious. I am fixin to buy guages and wasn't planning on the fuel pressure gauge. I have been a powerstroker for the last 4 years this is my first CTD so I am playing catch up on all of the known problems.

Sparky10,

You could check out Westach gauges. You can get a dual needle gauge with boost and EGT in the same gauge, then a fuel pressure gauge and tranmission temp gauge.

These are what I have installed. 3 gauges measuring boost/EGT, fuel pressure, and engine oil temp. /transmission temp.

Bought them from Genos Garage.

I second the dual gauge option. I am using the SPA dual gauges so I have 6 functions monitored in the space of three but the Westachs are a quality guage as well and they have a variety of dual gauges also.

Nag, nag, nag, ... get a fuel pressure gauge

So I started looking at Geno's to see what I should get. Surprise, only two of the lines they carry offer a fuel pressure gauge, the Di-Pricol and Westach. I really don't care for the look of the dual boost/pyro of the Westach, so that leaves only the Di-Pricol if I want the same brand for the whole set. Problem is, I kind of prefer the electriconic interface of the Westach FP guage. The nice people at Geno's said that Autometerhas a FP guage, but that it's too expensive, so they don't carry it.

What should I do.

My truck has 23,000 miles on it, and the fuel pressure has never been checked as far as I know. Funds are limited right now, so I'm thinking about getting a FP gauge to hook up temporarily for test, and then install the whole set when I win the lottery.
