Im having the head decked because of a coolant leak around the thermostate. What size of head gasket should I replace with. This is the first time the head will be worked on. I believe some have said go with a marine gasket? What are the cummins part numbers?
Match the head gasket thickness to the amount removed to true up the head. The part numbers are different for the different thicknesses. The data plate near the injection pump has the ESN which Cummins will need. To the best of my knowledge, all present 12 valve head gaskets are marine gaskets.
The stock gasket will work fine. The only compression change is in the tiny bit smaller area around each valve (assuming the valves weren't sunk in farther). I had . 012 taken off of mine 156k miles ago and have had zero problems (lots of towing). The thinker you go the harder it will be to start in cold weather and more smoke at start up. If you are highly modified and pushing big boost numbers then a thicker gasket might be a better idea. I personally try to keep mine at or below 30 psi most of the time just to be safe. I also run 16º timing.
That's correct that the marine gasket is the stock gasket now and has been since '98.
