I have a buddy that just got a 93 4x4 5spd dually that has the pump turned up a bit. He is concerned with the egts getting up around 1200-1300 pulling a little 4-5,000 lbs trailer.

I have a two turbos laying around, a HX-35 with 12cm housing and a banks power elbow and 4" down pipe. The other turbo is a HX-40 with a 19cm housing and a 4" down pipe.

My question is which one would work best or would a hybrid be even better? Also what do most of you guys do for a larger down pipe? It looks pretty tight in there.

My buddy might try to turn the pump up later and maybe do some injectors, he also has 3. 55 gears.

Thanks

If all he is gonna do is what you've said, I think the 35 would be the best way to go. I'm not an avid fan of the 40 anyway and with a 19 housing, it would take a day and a half to spool up.

If the egt's are an issue, find a 16 housing or a 14 for the 35 and he should be set.

I'd recommend checking the intake system for leaks- these trucks are getting old enough that the intercoolers will leak, and show no real signs of it. What kind of boost is he seeing with the EGTs? If boost is >25-28psi, he is out of the efficiency map of the stock H1C turbo. What kind of hill? If it's a 10% grade, and he's going 75mph, high EGT is normal. If it's a 4% hill, and he hits the high EGT at 55, then stuff needs to be checked out.

The hills aren't too big around here. I think maybe 4-8%, and he can get about 25lbs. What are the specs of the H1C? Compressor and turbine?

If you have that 2nd gen elbo or banks power elbo that "should" fit . I used a 2nd gen exhaust brake and a 4" down pipe and it bolted right on, i chose to use flex around the t case.

Good luck

HX-35 and a 16 sq. cm. housing. Also advance the injection timing a bit if it hasn't already been done, and ditch the stock muffler--it's very restrictive. I replaced it with a simple glass pack on my '92, but any straight through design will work great, even straight pipe for that matter.
