Undercoating - worth the money?

What is your best (repeatable) MPG with a 2003/2004 (non 600)?

The exhaust upgrade bug has bitten me and I have narrowed my choice to 3 different configurations so thought I would post a poll for input.

What I have now is an 03 with 3. 5” down pipe & stock 4” system. I use a VA L1 box with no other mods. With the VA turned up I am only at 300/660

I want it quiet up to ½ throttle and beyond that a little louder is ok but don’t want more noise while towing either.

Which of these 3 systems would you do and if you don’t care for any of them please post what you like.

  1. A Turbo back 4” Banks System.
  2. A 51" straight through 4” Fleetguard Nelson #83131M muffler using the stock 3. 5” down pipe, a 3. 5” to 4” adapter and the factory 4” tail pipe.
  3. Same as number 2 but go to the 51” Nelson #86514M that has a 4" inlet and a 5" outlet with a full 5" tail pipe.

    [/list=1]

Any of these should flow much better than stock and I am thinking #2 would be the most quiet then #3 and #1 being the more loud. My guess is that flow would be in that same order also.

I don't know anything about your #2 and #3. I am gonna go with the Banks very shortly. Been doing a lot of research on it.

i think #3 would be cool. 5" pipes look good i think, but all you see is the tail section. the mid pipe doesn't need to be 5" really [although i do have a 5" system downpipe back]

I had Banks 4-inch turbo back on my '96. It IS loud, but consider this. If you are towing, you HAVE to get the Banks brake. I wound up using mine 100% of the time even though I only tow about 5% of the time. I mounted the switch on the gearshift so I had complete finger control. FUN is slowing down almost as fast as everyone else without using regular brakes and watching people eat your rear bumper because your brake lights didn't come on!!! The Banks 4-inch gives a deep roar in the cab, but sounds like a big-rig to those on the outside. Good luck with your decision!

I am running the Diesel Dynamics 4" system. You can get the Magnaflow or Walker 21471 muffler with it. Having heard both, I prefer the Walker.

I just put the banks kit on about two weeks ago. I am really suprised at how mellow and qiet it is until you romp on it. My wife couldn't even tell until I told her. When you jam it really hard it will come to life though. I am very pleased with the kit and I also really like that it is true 4" from the turbo. I would buy it again.

That is the sound level, and with the windows down it sounds awsome like a big rig, and with the windows up it has a nice deep rumble that you can tell you are pouring the fuel to it.

Banks

I couldnt be happier with my Banks exhaust. I also would not

classify it as loud, its loud when you want it to be, with a nice

deep tone. Ditto what -bchesley- said.

Neither the Walker nor the Magnaflow is loud under low and moderate power. Both get loud under full power as they are straight through, basically zero restriction designs. The Walker has a deeper tone for me. The Magnaflow sounds like a big ricer under power. :(

Out of all the Banks stuff I've put on my truck I would have to say that Iam happiest with the monster exhaust & the Banks brake.

Thanks everyone for the great input. Seems most who opt for Banks is happy. I wonder if those that voted "something else" did cuz they don't like that company, I know there are a few.

Seems like a waste to toss the factory piping and since I am looking for quiet yet better flow the 51" muff may be the ticket.

Decisions, decisions...

Matt400,

I put the Nelson 86131M on the Ghost Rider and then last Friday I add a 4" x 6" x 24" Stainless Steel exhaust tip. See photo:

This really sounds great! Not too loud, just a real deep throaty sound! I'm really liking it, and Kathy hasn't complained a bit. You can hear it under ecceleration but while cruising you can't hear it at all. With the White Obsession after driving on the freeway for 60 miles, your ears would be ringing. Not with this setup! :D Oo.

What did you have before that would have your ears ringing? Sweet looking chrome tip! BTW

That's a 6" Stainless Steel Tip from Rip at Source Automotive!

On the White Obsession I had a 4" Jardine with a 30" MagnaFlow on it. I finally had to put another 24" MagnaFlow on that I got from Rip to make my ears stop ringing!

Wow, so you had twin magnaflows and then finally pulled them both for the 51"er.

I was just looking at my stock system again last night and noticed that while certain sections of the 3rd gen are 4" there is more restriction than just the 3. 5 down pipe. The factory muffler is a 3. 5" inlet and outlet so the pipe is necked down to accept the muffler.

You got me wondering about that muffler now. Maybe a a Banks system, less their muffler and use the 51" instead.

The back tailpipe that goes over the axle, where the muffler attaches, I just cut the 3 1/2" off so that left 4", I attached the rear of the muffler to it. On the front of the muffler I used a 3 1/2" ID /4" OD adaptor to connect to my 3 1/2" pipe exhaust pipe from the turbo to the muffler.

I know mine isn't really a stock Banks but with the Aeroturbine just aft of the downpipe and then straight thru to the tip-----well it just Flamin' Rocks!!! I love it and may even route a dual out my side to double the pleasure and great music!!!! It just has all the right sounds without the obnoxious bite of a straight pipe to me. It's perfect. :D
