*Cough* Dang it chrysler wake up! *Loosing market*

Help with a VIN number.

I'm looking for some back ground three diesel engines, IH DT466 , 3116CAT , 3126CAT. I have a friend that is looking at three used tool trucks with these power plants, all have low mileage, under 100k. He's curious about reliability, cost to run, maintenance issues. He'll average around 35-40k a year. Any information or input would be very helpful.

THANKS

the 466 probably would be best i think... they are reliable, parts are easy/cheap to get. the cat engines are nice, but parts are expensive... the 3126 is a heui engine, the 3116 is either mui or heui. and the 466 depending on vintage, will be heui or inline mechanical pump...

I would go with the 466... . good motor and not bad to repair... parts or cost wise. CATs are good pullers... . but every part is gold plated and you pay as much for it. :-laf :-laf :-laf

The CAT 3126/3116 are the same motor pretty much. GM owns the rights on the 3116s..... so CAT just took the motor and slapped a 3126 tag on it and sold it that way. Both are HEUI. I could be wrong... . lol wont be the first time. :D But I never saw a 3116 in another OEM truck other than GM. Now the 3126s I've seen in both GM and non-GM trucks.

DT466s are either Common-Rail or Mechanical inline injection, depending on the vintage.

The only one I have experience with is the DT466. We have them on our drill rigs. Excellent motors. Very reliable.

One of our rigs has the DT466 in the truck and a Cummins on the deck... . best of both worlds. . :D

CAT 3126/3116 are the same motor pretty much.

3116 is 6. 6 liter displacment, 3126 is 7. 2 displacment... 3126 is more modern... i am pretty sure it is also a 24v engine [or maybe just the new c7's are 24v], while the 3116 is a 12v
