Time for a programmer. I know smarty is the only way to go, but which one? I've heard good things about the JR, but i was also looking at the S-06. Is there an advantage over the S-06 besides more power levels?

Ive been playing with my JR for some time now... load, unload, load, change, tinker, test drive... etc... . I've been from completely stock to smoke show... .

Most recently, I have put it back to the default economy setting and plan on towing with it this weekend... .

The truck is MUCH stronger in the mid-range accelleration, I hear the economy setting is only 40 hp, but it appears to be a much more useable 40 hp... right in the middle where it needed it. just a slight haze from a rolling start thru red-line. . Fuel mileage appears to be better, but I want to wait until I have ran several tanks thru it before settling on a finished number. .

EGT seems lower, but there again, I want to see it while towing.

I was very happy with my Jr, then I installed twins. At that point, the Jr couldn't give me enough fuel to take advantage of all the extra air, and therefore no extra power. Without twins, I wouldn't have needed the Sr.

I do some moderate towing. 10-15k trailer weight. Bigger boats, smaller heavy equipment, snowmobile trailers, etc. My goal is to be at or around 500rwhp with good driveability characteristics. I'm planning on a clutch, turbo, cam, and possibly injectors in the near future. Just trying to figure out the best combo to go with.

Based on the trailer weight you want to tow I suggest the Jr, but it won't get you to 500 so you will need to go with a Sr.

A single turbo that will keep 500 rwhp cool probably won't be good for a towing turbo with that weight.

About 450 rwhp has been the number I have heard as the max the cooling system will support. I am at 400 rwhp and can pull 215° on a long grade at near WOT in 6th, and 225° is the max Cummins recommends. My cam/turbo also dropped coolant temp a few degrees.

If you are building it to tow I suggest the Smarty Jr, Cam, 62ish turbo (I like the Garrett Stage 2). I like the Jr torque and timing settings over the Sr for towing applications. This will give you a solid 400rwhp. If you add 50 hp nozzles you will be in the 450 range and can turn it down if it's too much heat/EGT's for towing.

If you do want to try 500 rwhp and tow 10K at that level you will need to run twins.

I think I can settle for around 400. I read your write up on your garret powermax install. Very well done! How are you liking it now that you've got some miles on it? Still everything you though it would be?

With the additional adjustability of the Sr its worth the extra $$. You can customize a lot more things and load up TNT when you get an itch to play. :D

I don't think you will need or even want 500 while towing. 400 rear wheel is plenty. I actually turn my Smarty way down while towing and never even have to go full throttle. I would assume that my rear wheel HP is around 300 when Smarty is turned way down, and that seems to be plenty HP to tow anything you would need.
If 500 is truly what you are gunning for, you will need Sr, and probably towing twins, since I think racing twins wouldn't work well due to slow spool time. I don't actually know what my rwhp is, but I would assume 500 ish, but that's just bench racing until I get on a real dyno. My iPhone app called "Dynolicious" says around 500 rwhp, and people all say the app seems to be accurate.

I have the Jr, very happy with it. I had the Sr, too much smoke, so I went to the Jr. I also am running twins, plenty of power with the Jr and the smoke was more controllable. I use my truck about 50/50 street/towing, my tow loads vary, most are heavy. I live/drive at high altitudes, so smoke happens more. The Jr is easy to use, settings are easy, made more sense to get a programmer that was better for my use.

I agree, just today I was driving up and down my dirt road with my Smarty on my knee checking smoke and acceleration on different timing and torque settings. I tow 13k and have plenty of pull combing out of the deep hollows of Alabama in the tow setting ( around 400 hp). As soon as I get rid of my DM flywheel and clutch and install a new SBC I'll be able to test out the the performs level. For me Jr. has been the way to go.

I am very happy with the turbo. It does great from low rpm, low load, to high load use. The only time its a little smokey is at 7K feet plus on a warm day.

You are reloading the SW between adjusting the options right?

Yeah, I'd stop at the house and change SW then cruise back out to the dirt road (driveway is a mile long) and try out the different settings for each one. Presently I'm set on Towing, Default Torque and #4 Timing to reduce smoke. I think I've got the winner for my truck until I get the new clutch in.

I just ordered the Smarty Jr from Glacier Diesel Performance. I'm not going for all out power with this truck, so I think I'm going to revise the mods I have in mind.

Thanks for all the input! Much appreciated!

I thought that the jr was basically the same as the sr levels sw1- sw3. Are you guys saying that the jr sw3 is different than the sr sw3? I run the sr and rarely run higher than sw5. Before the cam with smarty off truck was at 411hp. When I tow heavy I run sw3. As long as I keep the rpm up I have now issue with egt. Running the single I can if I am not careful eclipse the sun. If I get just a bit of boost going then then is no issue. It is fun to wind her up and let her buck at times. There are lots of high end cars in my area and I like to pace them off the lights. It's funny because they will take off quick and I match them, then they push forward and I match them again. Next thing you know we are both going pretty fast and I,ll lift and let them go knowing that I have lots left.
