So if I wanted a brand new 3500 dually with the H. O. , and wanted the auto trans, which transmission is the best for over the road hauling. The 4 speed or 5 speed??

I don't believe you'll have a choice with a 2005. The 4-speed 48re automatic is the only offering in the 2500/3500 series. A 5-speed automatic is available in the 1500 series with gas engines.

The rumor mill has it that a 5 or 6 speed auto is being used in some test mules, but whether it will available for 2006 is unknown (most likely not).

six speed nv

Just a thought, but if you are doing a lot of over the road hauling with heavy weights, the six speed NV is in my opinion a much more solid and durable transmission.

The NV5600 is no longer available for order, you might find one on a lot. The manual has been replaced with the G56.

no more nv 5600?

:( I think I just might cry,,,oh wait,,,it passed. Why would they leave the nv behind. It was won of the things when I bought my truck that was a must. Other than a Cummins of course.

Yep, that's my guess too, they probably discovered they could save a buck or two by building it in house. I'm glad I got the NV, although I haven't heard anything bad about the new one.

There are also Mercedes-benz buses using the "g56" transmission.

Considering new parts are being sourced for the project, I'm lead to believe the new trannys are a badge and name swap, not an existing design?

hopefully we see the good and durable things from MZB coming over and of course the other way. My 81 300sd has 220000+ on it's five cylinder diesel and it still runs like a champ (maybe a smokey one tho. ) :D I would had to see a repeat of ford and the jags. New Jags look like a taurus. :{ However I'll stay with my NV5600 thank you.

I have a NV5600 in my truck, WOW, that is a nice shifting transmission. The only issue I had was with the little plastic piece on the shifter that kept rotating. I took it off and glued it in place. Nice transmission, New Venture transmissions are really heavy duty.

Any comments on a GV for my CTD,3500,4x4,6SPD? I am in the market for an aftermarket tank and a GV or US Gear auxillary transmission.

GV vs. US Gear Aux. Trans.

I'm not an expert in these matters but, I've heard that if you plan on putting an exhaust brake on that the GV doesn't work too well. Apparently, they work well pulling but, when you put a retarding load on them, the clutch won't hold. Guys have said that with an exhaust brake the US Gear is the only way to go.

Again, I don't have an exhaust brake, GV or US Gear, so I can't speak from experience. But, before I bought anything I'd certainly check it out.
