Got a call from a well know dealer and he made me an offer I may not be able to refuse.

I have a 2005 dually on order with another dealer. It will be coming with the G56 transmission. I have some serious doubts about this new setup and don't want to be a Dodge test bed for a new product. I don't like the G56 OD (6th) gear ratio of 0. 79 compared to the 0. 73 of the NV5600. I also have some uneasiness with the new "dual mass" clutch.

He can get me the truck I want for about $1800 less then the one I have ordered. It has all the options I'm looking for, except it does not have the limited slip differential. He is going to see if he can find one with the LSD but right now he doesn't have one in stock.

Now I have to decide to take it, not have a LSD, or wait for my ordered one to come in and see how it all turns out with the new transmission and clutch... Decisions...

hi rick:

obviously you make the final decision. but, based on my experience with the LSD, its a waste of money. i started a thread back in january on how i got stuck on 2" of snow on level ground with my 2WD. its better to invest in a set of more aggressive tires. i can't give you an opinion on it with 4WD. the 4WD guys need to advise on this.

as far the transmission goes, i don't think you can go wrong with the nv5600. i love mine and i jamb it hard from time to time. gearing and final ratio are definately an issue with the g56. g56 with 3. 73 is approximately like nv5600 with 4. 10

good luck and congratulations on your new truck (which ever one it is)

I didn't order LSD on mine and have never been disappointed. Been through some heavy snow, too - just put it in 4WD and creep - no problem. Reason I didn't order it was because I had visions of putting in something better than the factory offered (like an ARB) but never got around to it.

Take the NV5600 and put some of the $1800 towards a locker if you think you need it. The LSD is not worth $1800! The final gear ratio of the 5600 is worth more than the LSD. JMHO

I wouldn't own a truck without the LSD, because nothing aftermarket is available for these axles.

Tim,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember reading about an elocker on a link from this site. Maybe not available for out trucks??

IMHO you have a clear understanding of the facts and the situation you are in. You better jump on that NV5600 while you still have the chance!

Its hard to have a strong opinion on a unknown and easy on the known (NV5600). I went out last week and bought a 3500 just to avoid the uncertainty OF the new transmission. Maybe they are both good, but for the money I'm not in the gambling mood.

Yep same here!!!

Great post. :D

YUP - all that pretty well sums up why *I* bought the last of the 2nd generation trucks instead of the first of the 3rd - have had NO regrets so far... ;) :D Oo.

Okay... thanks for the inputs...

I have a quote from the dealer and it does have just about everything I wanted, but no LSD and its white. My 2001 was white, and I can live with it (won't show the dirt as much).

It also comes with the California emissions package. What does that mean? If it's just a designation, I can live with it, but if it adds more emissions stuff or "detunes" the engine, then it is a non starter...

The California Emissions Package simply means the truck is certified for sale as a new vehicle in California. This certification is required in California or it can't be licensed and registered if it has less than 7500 miles. This should have no impact on your decision unless you are in California or another state that also requires the California emissions certification which I don't think occurs with the 2005 diesel trucks. Anyone else know for sure?

Okay... That would be acceptable... The only question I have is that according to my "build code" data "NAE" is "emissions equipment, California, and "YCF" is "emissions equipment waiver to CA. " The quote I got says "NAE. " I just want to make sure that nothing is added to the vehicle, and I would rather hear that from TDR rather then the dealer, who will probably tell me anything I want to hear...

As far as I know no one has ever figured out the difference between a California certified 2005 CTD and a 49 state version except for a sticker on the valve cover and the YCF code you mentioned. TDR member Tomeygun would know if anyone does.
