New truck break-in. How long?

DC Manual question

Looks like the end of this week or first of next week I will be ready to order a new plate, but I am having a difficult time deciding on the #12 230/605 or to go with the 280/680. Truck is a 96 5 speed. I have already purchased the gauges and have them installed. Will be pulling gooseneck stock trailer, 24ft goose flatbed, and 30ft 5 er. I feel the 230/605 would be plenty, but the 280/680 would be even better but would be pushing the limits of the clutch. Also sometimes the wife drives the truck not sure if at all if she would pay attention to the gauges. Need opinions.

Get the 280/680, you'll love it! My clutch is fine. You can always slide it back a little if you don't like all the power! If you watch your driving habits, your mpg will be good. Don't forget the afc kit - one of the best driveability improvements you can make. As far as watching the gauges don't worry. The only time I need to watch is at very high rpm and working near full throttle - like towing up a pass in 4th close to redline. Craig

ROG,

Like many, been there & done that. If it was me, I'd start with the #11 1/2 of the way forward from center & slide the afc housing all the way forward. The low end was a little weak for me when it was centered. I don't think you'll have clutch problems. #ad
Let us know.

Your clutch should be ok with the #11 plate and your EGTs will be ok if you keep the RPMs under 2600 on a hard pull. I also would suggest the AFC spring kit.

There is one problem you will have after about a month or so you'll start think this isn't enough and add more stuff injectors, turbo housing, bigger turbo, & a governer spring kit. The clutch will not hold anything over the #11 plate so you need a clutch. This power is addicting watch out or soon you'll be a bombaholic like the rest of us #ad

A very big grin on your face, until you realize what you just did to your clutch. #ad

I agree with the others on the #11 plate. I started with the #12 and with in the week went to the #11 which is much better and have just had my pump timed from a setting of 10. 25* to a little over 15* and it all has made a great improvement and I pull on ocasion a 24' goose neck utility trailer without any problems but get gauges for safety and piece of mind.

6BT IN A GMC,

If Mark @ TST is correct, the #10 is 230hp stock & all the way forward in that pump is 60 more hp. With your weight though, low end EGT will be bunches.

Here is the e-mail from Mark:

The following TST Power Kits are offered for the '96-'98 12 Valve 215 hp Ram
Diesel 5 speeds:

Kit # Rated Power Peak Torque Price
Stock 215 hp @ 2600 rpm 440 lb-ft @ 1600
PK12 230 hp @ 2600 rpm 605 lb-ft @ 1600 $299
PK11 280 hp @ 2600 rpm 685 lb-ft @ 1600 $299 **
PK11* 300 hp @ 2600 rpm 700 lb-ft @ 1600 $475 **
PK10 330 hp @ 2600 rpm 750 lb-ft @ 1600 $299 **
PK10* 350 hp @ 2600 rpm 770 lb-ft @ 1600 $475 **

** Not certified for on highway use in North America

*Includes 16 cm2 turbine housing minus boost control

Note: The PK10 can only be used at full power about 30 seconds in each 5
minutes and is not for towing of any kind as turbine inlet temperature will
be too hot.

The 16 cm2 turbine housing ($175) is larger than the stock housing thus
exhaust manifold pressure and exhaust temperatures are reduced. An exhaust
pyro ($165) is highly recommended for both PK11 & PK10.

PK12 and PK11 can be used for towing in nearly all cases, and the torque
from these kits can usually be handled by the stock clutch. Torque of 700+
lb-ft will most likely require a better clutch, TST offer an 800 lb-ft
clutch for $595.

The 12 plate is 230hp in the 215. The 10 is way over 300 - closer to 340. Joe tried to talk me into a 10, but I don't want to do a clutch! I think he said the 10 is about 300hp at 2k rpm.

Stock is 215hp at the flywheel... #12 is 230hp at the rear wheels! The numbers quoted by TST is the hp rating on the ground, not flywheel (like a 300hp Duramax!).
