I'm trying to determine which turbo to put on my truck after some pump upgrades. It is a 96 5spd with a #12 plate, gsk, afc spring kit, and DD2's in the future. It's come down to deciding between the PDR HX40/16, and the PDR HX35/14wg. Let me know what you guy's think.

I have a bone stock HX40, have never tried any of Piers' turbos, but I would definitely say the HX40. If your choice was between a bone stock HX40 and Piers' HX35, I'd say go with the Piers HX35, but with the choices you are looking at, absolutely go with the bigger turbo.

I heard that Rip will be selling a gently used PDR HX35 pretty soon

rammin96 - The decision is one of HP & the rating of the HX35-14. Personally, I'd go straight to the Piers HX40-16. You'll have plenty of fueling bandwidth with that turbo.

As for turbo lag, yes, the stock HX40-16 has lag, as do all turbos. It's just how much lag you're willing to live with. For me, the stock HX40-16 lag is ok. Piers has less lag & I'll send it to Piers for Piersifying & take advantage of all that keen R&D.

If yours is the 215 pump, you've got a huge variety of plates past the #12, 11 & 10. The HX35 will have EGT problems in the higher fuel levels past these plates & perhaps with the #10, under the right conditions. If you go straight to the Piersified HX40-16 & have proven technology & room for more fuel. Oo.

My HX40/16 was modified by Pius of Bell Turbo. As far as I'm concerned, my truck has NO lag, but I don't "punch" the throttle either. I "roll on the power" and it takes off very strong right from a standing start, even when towing. I also don't do power brake starts. Maybe if I just punched the throttle I would feel some lag, but I can't afford to break my work truck. I would say go with the HX40 because the HX35/14 waste gated will cost the same as the bigger turbo.
