since they are so easy to hot rod:) and rebuild does anyone know which years of vw diesels came with ve pumps, seems like it might be a fun little car to hot rod. :D

Check out this site it is like TDR but for VW diesels. Extremely informative and lots more indepth technical info there than here even. I have an 03 jetta tdi and go there a lot for info.

The 81 I had was VE pumped.

The 99. 5 I have is VE pumped.

I think all the older ones from 78 thru at least 99. 5 have VE pumps.

There is one Mod that is electronic. If you to the TDI page, search on Champaign performance on a beer budget.

I did it on my 98, It was adding a diode across 2 wires in the harness that goes to the pump. good "seat of the pants" increese.

Jay: Your '99. 5 has a VP-37

It's a resistor, not a diode. I used a 660(?) ohm fixed value resistor wired up with a switch mounted on the dash of my TDI. With the switch 'on' and the resistor in the circuit, she stumbles at idle - that's your clue. Most people use a 1k ohm variable resistor so they can dial in the point where it stops stumbling at idle and leave it there. Since mine is on a switch, I shut it off when I don't want to deal with the stumbling... and turn it on when I need the extra ~15hp.

With the resistor in there, you're messing with the injection pump feedback to the ECM - effectively lying to the ECM and telling it that it needs to command the injection pump for more fuel. Depending on which method you use (fixed resistor, variable resistor, toggle switch, etc. ), you'd be hard pressed to spend $5. 00 to do this mod

IIRC, you wire the resistor across pins 2 and 3 in the injection pump harness. Double check to be sure! Do it on the 'car' side, not the pump side - for obvious reasons.

www.vwdiesel.net is another great site

Matt
