Question for all of you. It is time to move up to a megacab from my '01 quadcab. Is there a particular year that is better than the others? It will be used for daily commuting back and forth to work ~30 miles some highway and back and forth to the construction site ~60 miles mostly highway. We have horses coming in the near future so it will be used as the family horse camping vehicle. Please advise.

That's like asking what color to choose. It's all a matter of preference. I like any of the 3rd generation. I have an 05 with the NV5600 6 speed standard trans. Some folks say, stay away from the 05 because they have a plastic intercooler. That issue has not proven to be a problem. Between Quad and Mega Cab, it's whatever fits your needs. Me, I'd rather have the long bed than the bigger cab.

I'd go with the 2010 crew cab long bed unless you are looking for something used. That way you can tow a 5th wheel.

I read some owners were having trouble with the back door windows cracking but don't remember which year( two type of windows one cracks the other one doesn't).

I also read the a/c on the mega cabs isn't to good. 2007's are supposed to be improved.

If you were to buy used,I would suggest a 2009 Mega Cab if that is what you want. I have a 2008 Mega Cab 6. 7L, 68RFE Auto, with 3:73 gears, 4X4 and the fuel mileage is not to great in the stock form. When pulling our 5er my best fuel mileage on flat land was 10. 7 MPG in the hills of SD it was 9. 4 MPG. When not pulling 50% city/50% highway my best mileage was 14. 4 MPG.

I think that the 09 MY, trucks have improved the fuel mileage on these from what I have read.

If you our going to buy new then I would read the post on that MY to find out how they are doing.

Those are real nice but I can't squeeze it in my garage. Lord I tried to make it work. I have a hard time saying goodbye to my longbed. I use it all the time. However the expanding family needs more room and the two labs will have to take up residence in the bed. I was really trying to find a 5. 9L for the obvious reasons but am hopeful that the 6. 7 has gotten better. There is only about a $5K price difference between the two but he mileage is much better on the 6. 7. Realistically (another can of worms) what can one expect with a stock 6. 7 4x4 and 3. 73 gears. I am just looking for generalities but the number I had in my head was around 15mpg. Has anyone changed out their front hubs to a manual locking kind? I saw the magazine Diesel Power did this and they claimed 2. 5 mpg increase. Interested to see if those numbers are exagerated or not.

Jraker,

See my post above for stock fuel numbers. This was a year's worth of driving. I have since started using a programer and I am getting around 11. 5 to 12. 5 MPG in the mountains when pulling my 5er and the best on highway is 17. 5 with out the camper. This is all hand calcuated fuel mileage not from the overhead display and I track my mileage at every fill up.

Make the garage bigger.

You posted your question in the ISB6. 7 forum so we have to assume you are primarily interested in a 2007. 5 or later ISB6. 7 but if I wanted one primarily to use as a 30 mile commuter vehicle I think I would consider a clean, well-cared for '06 or '07 with ISB5. 9 and less emission control crap.

Don't misunderstand, I love the ISB6. 7 trucks and mine has been troublefree but many report sooting issues when they drive them primarily as commuter transportation vehicles.
