What does a small puff of white smoke on the very first cold start of the day indicate? I have not seen the small white puff at any other time.

white puff at startup

My guess is that you may not be letting the intake manifold heaters go off (wait to start light) before you initiate start. From the stand point of a problem, it doesn't indicate one at all. Depending on the coolness of the engine when you first crank it for the day, there will be a slight to extended puff. If the puff is also accompanied by long cranking to get the cummins running first thing, you have a leak back in the fuel system. You probably have some fairly cool overnight temperatures and that accounts for the situation.

I noticed that my P-pumps do that on a cold or cool morning. I'm told that they be very retarded (in terms of timing) My truck will not do that and would have to guess it's due to the timing I operate with... ... ... . ? I have no KSB/grid heater thingy either, so I probably should have lots of white smoke... ... ... ... ...
