I would say it is normal.



I have seen a lot of people worry about this and I am not sure why. A gas motor does it, so why wouldn't a diesel. You have hot air going into the cold morning air and it makes white smoke.



In the summer it shouldn't be near as much.
 
Yeah normal, try installing a Smarty and it gets MUCH worse. My truck with injectors, TST and pressure definately smokes when cold add a Smarty and 10deg temps and it blows white every time I hit the throttle (even after warmup). Thats one reason I have put the stock software back on the truck.
 
Smoke or steam from the exhaust/converter heating up?

Some steam normal. White smoke is bad unless it is modified to get a lot of extra fuel.
 
White smoke at startup is normal when it gets below 40-45F until the exhaust heats up. When it is really cold it may produce smoke constantly due to moisture condensation in the exhaust gas. I see this when down around 0F consistantly. I also see OTR trucks doing the same thing on a cold day.
