I have had the same issues I have heard described here so many times, rough idle and lots of white smoke on startup after sitting 5-6 hours. I also had what I call a loud ticking noise. Anyway, 1 trip to the dealer, and I'm told they all do that. Not familiar with Cummins, I can't question it at that time. So, I go back to TDR, and read all the other horror stories about injectors. Second trip to the dealer, I ask them to check for possible injector problem. When I pick up my truck, they say there is no problem, and when I read the work order I am told TO READ THE OWNERS MANUAL! :--)

Ok, now I'm #@$%! So I pick my truck up and stew for a day or two, then call the service mgr. I explain how insulted I am at the tech's comments on the work order. He proceeds to lecture me on grid heaters, glow plugs and the like. I let him go on, then when he was finished, I asked him if it was normal for a cummins to make white smoke when it is 75 degrees outside. He said no. Maybe I should bring it in.

Ok, third trip to the dealer. Mgr says he will start it the next morning to see if it is an "excessive" amount of smoke. Again I ask if it should make any at all. He says no. So I am thinking any at all would be excessive. Anyway, I wait two days and call back. He says he went out and started it that morning, and yes, he thought it was excessive. He tells me I need to change my fuel filter and air filter before they can troubleshoot any further. oh, yeah, and that will be $90. I ask if that is the cause of my problem. He hems and haws, and finally says it is. So I ask him to bet $90 that he is correct, that is to credit me if it still smokes. After a long pause he agrees. Guess what? It still smoked :-laf

To make a long story shorter, he called me today, and said I had 2 bad injectors. Oo. I knew it! #2 and #6. They are being overnighted, and will be replaced tomorrow.

I think, after reading all these threads that DC has a real problem with injectors on the early build 600's. Mine is 1/5/04

Mine is also a 1/04 build. She runs smooth as silk - except, when the temps are below 20* or so, after a cold soak of at least several hours, she runs a bit "rompy for the first 30 seconds - 1 minutes. White smoke, yes, but then she settles down . This morning 5*. White smoke for the first couple minutes, then clear.

While I understand that there are some bad injectors, when temps get REALLY cold, a diesel truck is gonna blow some smoke. These engines have gotten ALOT cleaner, efficient, and powerful, but we ain't THAT advanced yet.

My $0. 02. However, it seems that you did have a definite problem. I LOVE IT that you BET the dealer, and WON! Oo.

I'm glad it's fixed. good move on your part to get the filters done for free. I suspect you will see milage improvements too. :)

I kind of knew something was wrong, but couldn't say for sure. I'm getting ready to buy a big tractor and drag it around on a trailer. I wanted it fixed bedore my first pull
