well, as if it couldn't get any worse. I finally saved up the money and got my pump. Got it out last night in two hours. when installing the new one, the keyway fell of the pump and went somewhere into the gear case. anyone got any ideas? I tried the magnet and can't get it in very far... Thanks for the help abe

My VP died on a trip to northern Michigan, last Wednesday. I made it to the campground and shut off to unhook the TT. When I went to start the engine again, it wouldn't start. I checked the fuel pressure going into the VP and then disconnected the Torque Dog and the truck started.

Later, at the grocery store it wouldn't start again. I checked the pressures again, cracked three lines open and it started.

Thinking I might have a load of bad fuel, I fueled up. After that the truck started running like crap and blowing white smoke under load. It wouldn't start back up after I made it back to the campground.

Bill H was camping with me and offered to take me to Cummins in Saginaw, for a VP. Then he helped me with the 3 hour job of replacing it. Thanks Bill !!!

The only code that came up, doing the key thing, was the rear wheel speed sensor.

If you don't already have a service manual, get one. The manual tells you to turn the engine over so the key is in the 12 o'clock position before swapping out the pump, so you don't drop the key into the timing cover. The manual also says that you have to pull the cover, if you lose it.

I have a few questions though. .

The manual says the three digit key number has to match the numbers stamped on the pump and that the number relates to the pump timing. My old pump had an 035 key and 046 stamped on the pump, which was crossed out and 035 engraved above the 046 number. The new pump came with an 045 key and stamp on the pump.

How do you suppose going from an 035 to an 045 will affect performance? (Truck seems almost as strong now, without the Torque Dog, as it did before with the Torque Dog, with no black smoke)

Do you think my original pump was a reman?

What if I put the 035 on the 045 pump?
