I have a buddy that has an 01 w/ approx. 125k on his CTD. He says when he cold starts his truck sometimes it will barrel out white smoke and he has no throttle response. He can turn it off and let it sit for a second, and then restart it and it runs just fine. What gives guys? I told him I thought is was a failing vp and possibly lp. It only does it on cold starts, not if the engine is already warm. Suggestions... comments... ?

Have you checked to see if the fuel system has a leak. Could be getting air into the injection system. They will smoke kinda white when they are trying to bleed air out of the system.

Ill ask him, but why would the problem be resolved when he turned it off and then restarted? Thats the real puzzle... I dont understand why it would run fine 10 seconds later.

Once it starts it doesn't take long to purge the air, especially if it is a small leak. I had this problem with my truck and it would have to sit for 4 or 5 hours before the problem would show up again. If I shut it down and restarted it, it started and ran fine. One place that is bad about this is the check valve on the return line going back to the tank. It will allow the system to loose prime when it sits for a while.

Read the code by turning the key on three times leaving it on the third time, and write down the codes that appear on the OD. Report back if it has anything more the P1693. SNOKING

Ok guys... I will see him at work tomorrow and give him a printout of these responses and have him check all these things... thanks for the help and I will report back shortly!
