Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas about this. I was coasting down Vail Pass, overdrive on, exhaust brake off, and with no load. About 75 mph, the truck missed badly and blew a big plume of white smoke. The whole thing lasted about 2 seconds until I stepped back on the accelerator. It happened twice in about a 4 minute period, then not again since. Any ideas where to start looking??

Thanks, JRG

If it was a little bit cold out that can happen, especially at higher altitudes. When coasting downhill, especially if you are engine braking, the cylinder temperatures can get so low that the fuel doesn't burn completely, which makes white smoke. Once you give it a little throttle, more fuel goes in and heats things up and it will stop smoking after a few seconds.

This is usually a bigger problem when the outisde temps near or below zero.
