Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) white smoke

Hi all, my friend's 02 will take off just fine and when it shifts into second it blow's white smoke and falls on it's face then it will chatch and take off. any idea's, he has no gauges and the truck is stock,118000 mi, I'm thinking lift pump Thank's Don
