HELP!! I'm new to diesels and I have some major problems, I think. I just got my transmission rebuilt on my 94, stock except for 230hp TST fuel plate. It recently started blowing white smoke out, what I call the blow-by tube on the driver's side of the engine, and missing really bad. Can anyone give me some ideas on what might have happened? I really hate to think that I might be looking at rebuilding the motor, but that might be the case. I'd appreciate any input that anyone might give.

You are talking about the one that hangs done by the starter comes out of block?

I don't know but maybe I can get you started in some direction if not right one.

The tube is to let out gasses in the block formed during combustion. This is called an open crank case ventilation system.

This keeps seals and gaskets in the engine from blowing/developing leaks.

I take it your crankcase tube is blowing out to much smoke or more than normal. Try to describe how much smoke.

Is your exhaust blowing smoke? what color? how much?

I have noticed the smoke coming out of the tube is white or some what white. It hould come out at steady rate especially if you have been driving it.

I would say off hand you blew the rings on one or two cylinders.

If your losing coolant or you have coolant in oil head gasket maybe but don't know if it would come thru tube. I know eventually it will come thru tail pipe as in water droplets. (as in blown head gasket)

out of tail pipe

black smoke = to much fuel to air ratio also unburned fuel.

white smoke= air to cold for combustion, I also think it means to much air for fuel amount.

Just trying to think why you have excess smoke from tube.

One combustion exhaust is getting by cylinders or can not get out of them.

Maybe coolant is getting in crankcase.

Engine miss can be caused by many things.

Dirty or plugged injectors.

Sticking valve in injector pump.

to much moisture or oil in cylinder.

timing.

But will these or other symptoms cause excessive smoke out of crankcase tube I don't know.

Maybe someone will reply now that they see one reply.

Good luck. Will try and research about crankcase gasses.

White smoke out the blow by tube????????

Never crawled under mine at idle or 65 mph!!!!(whell know there is vapor there)

But unless your eng has been abused not ready for overhaul!!!!

If it is out of the blow by tube , you can't telll blue from white.

In your profile include the miles on speedo!!

Can tell better ,but - are we looking for trouble that is not there. ??

If you think there is a eng miss ,warm up eng,run drown the hwy, loaded or un-loaded (get the temp up) pop the hood and dip your finger in your coffie mug/or water and dab on each exh manifold port and (a quick dab won't burn your finger) and watch for which cyl port stays wet longest(I'm talking LONG'est) never dry's-- that is the bad ing/cyl. Rpl inj first. then it could it be the dist . pump or the cyl it self??? But if you have a infraid sensor this is a simple test. .
