Hello

does Chrysler engineer's{?} actually design

our auto transmission's, or does a outside vendor

built them with Chrysler spec's.

or again, is it a shared product with g. m. :(

Our auto trannies (both the 47RH - prior to '96, and the 47RE - '96 and up) have had constant 'improvements'. They are not even close to being up to the task even brand new from the factory. Money spent here will remedy the situation in very short order... . the change is dramatic and will hold up to just about any HP level.

The auto trannies are designed and built by Daimler Chrysler... . unfortunately they could be a little better from the OEM, but that's what the aftermarket is there for!

These transmissions are members of the TorqueFlite type of transmission. My Dad had one in his '63 Plymouth factory hot rod. One reason they don't work well for these diesels is that the power is developed at low RPM so the pressure isn't there so things slip. To get them to work right for our engines check the link in Matt's post. That's DTT the ONLY place for trans upgrade stuff!!

D/C engineering designes the trans.

D/C purchasing buys the parts from who ever can supply them at the specified price and to the quality requirements of D/C.

D/C (probably although a subcontractor might) then assembles the parts.

YOU could build the transmissions if you had the equipment to make the parts. I'm willing to bet that the parts that make up the trans come from several vendors. Clutches, springs, gaskets, hardware, castings, fabrications, machined shafting, etc.

That is the unfotunate part of OEM goodies... . they put in their vehicles whatever is the most cost effective.

I TOTALLY agree with Joe, our auto trannies were never built or designed to have a diesel in front of them. The torque converter and valve body are the root of most of these problems, however..... Such a high-torque, low RPM engine absolutely destroys these stock parts. The upgraded parts are holding up very well under all sorts of abuse. The parts that DTT offers are specifically designed for diesels and are custom manufactured for your particular application with thousands upon thousands of man hours worth of research put behind them.

Our stock trannies are not unlike all other OEM autos..... I can't think of any of 'em besides a few of the Allison units that could withstand a diesel right out of the box.

The F*rd E4OD and GM 4L80-E are great trannies, some may even consider them better than what Chrysler offers... . but they too require modified parts to withstand high torque/HP engines.
