Wuz Up Sat Nite?

All that scrapple and ponhaus Paunhaus panhaus talk is taking me back to visiting the grandparents in somerset county pa. When I was learning to ride a two wheeler. I passed on it but elders dug right in.

a bit of a diversion but the era of my grandparents went cabin camping in the woods. Many kin and friends in camp. All the ladies in dresses that buttoned down the front and aprons for cooking. I wish I could turn back the years and visit that camp and see what was cooking.

I am 15 miles from the Somerset County line. Where were your grandparents from?

I think grandma was from Edie but their home that my dad and uncle grew up in was Gray. Gray was a mining town, grandpa worked for the mine but not as a miner. The town was laid out in a grid, company store, a ball diamond kids park and a memorial to those from Gray that served us. Later the grands moved to Somerset not far from the High school IIRC. Somerset is a pretty neat town and they had a noon siren daily and I caught my first fish in a pond near the HS with grandpa. We had several family reunions in Trent behind the general store in their dance hall. We've visited Mountain Craft Days and Farmers and Threshers in New Centerville several times since the late 70's Lots of good memories from the Laurel Highlands and we just found an old recipe for Sugar Pie that grandma would whip up for kids when the adult pies were in the oven.

Thanks for asking.

This thread has awakened a lot of old memories... When I was a kid, none of the schools were air conditioned and in SW TX, we have summer 8 months a year. You pretty much had to make sandwiches out of lunch meat with mustard, mayo tuned nasty, or PBJ. But, I remember enjoying how my double bologna, double cheese, extra mustard Sammy was REALLY good warmed up by the heat. Cheese was ALMOST melted and mustard was kinda chemically mixed with it. I'm one of those folks who can and do like the same thing all the time. I like the jalapeno bologna a lot too.

I've seen scrapple take many forms, many times made with head cheese, but my Mom fried whole hog pork sausage crisp, placed in pot with water and cornmeal, sage and black pepper. She then poured it into a square cake pan, placed in fridge overnight, then cut into squares, fried, and served with fried eggs. I liked lots of butter and syrup on mine. Every so often, I make it at home. MMMM.

Cheers, Ron

Lol. I know exactly where Gray is. It is just outside of Jennerstown. I've been by there hundreds of times.

Here is a screen shot of the relationship between my place and Gray. It is just on the other side of the ridge.

We Had Mickey Mouse waffles thick cut bacon and a nice small egg n cheese omelette. One thing we’ve demanded at our breakfast table is REAL maple syrup. We found a real source while in Vermont and that can be gotten here.

We’ll have bacon for breakfast tomorrow. It’s still got a few hours left on the traeger today.

Making 3 flavors. Pepper, maple, and chipotle honey.

Wife bought me a smoker on black Friday. I'm in love! I've smoked just about every form of beef, venison, pork, and poultry I have got my hands on in the last month. I Caught some steel head over Christmas with my boy so that's next on the list.

I've been cooking on a traeger for over 25 years, but just recently started doing more brine/curing of meats. It's a game changer!!!

Im not your average millennial. Yea I'm in my late 20s wear flat bills and grew up listen to punk. But I live out of masion jars for my food. The glass really cooks everything nice or keeps cold cold. I don't like buying things I can make myself. Sure with 3 kids and wife eating out makes sense sometimes But I like building things. Owning a home in Puget sound is expensive specially on one income, I'm building a 38x28 shop per code, and own toys so yea I love saving a buck and making and bringing my own lunch and food does just that for work
