Being Stopped for Fuel
I live in a small southeastern Indiana town, Versailles. The DOT's in this area are very very THICK to say the least. Recently they have been sitting up road blocks, and pulling EVERY diesel truck over and putting them on the scales, dipping tanks, and checking trailers/tiedowns if the truck is pulling anything. Along with this, if the truck is pulling a trailer and is over 10K lbs they have been ticketing them for driving with no CDL lisence (yes a pick up, you need a CDL to drive it if it weighs more than 10K lbs goign down the road). And, on top of this, if you are pulling for a business you are ticketed for not having DOT #'s on the side, and your business name on the side. A friend of mine that owns his own lawn care business got ticketed last week. His total $790. 00 He got ticketed for: Red Fuel, Not having 1 push mower tied down (which was between two scag zero turn lawn mowers), Improper tie downs (they say you have to have CHAINS on 4 corners), No CDL, No Business Name on the side of the truck, No Indiana DOT# on the side of the truck. It cost him 3 hours sitting along the road with his 4 employees, and 790 dollars in fines, and about 3 days of making phone calls, 200 bucks for stickers, and about 150 in registration fees, and about 200 bucks for new chains. This state is rediculious. We figured it up, he goes out of state 1 or 2 times a year, and leaves the COUNTY 2 times a week to mow yards outside of the county. I believe these laws were enacted to guard us against true violators, but I believe it has been carried WAY TOO FAR!!!!
I have been told the reason for the heavy and strict enforcement is because the Indiana Motor Carriers Division is no longer state funded, they are basically working on commission. I dont know this for a fact, but thats what I have been told.
Y-Not, you better watch out, we are very close to you. Dont roll through Versailles with ANYTHIGN wrong.
Along with my close friend I know my cousin, 5 of my familys trucks, about 10 other prominent business owners have been ticketed. I have been able to steer clear.
They have however been successful in increasing the busyness of the "Back roads". If anyone is hauling much of anything, or burning red fuel they use the back roads.
