Just So You Know

I just read a post from Packman that mentioned he has a Newf. I have three, they're like potato chips, you can't have just one. Newf owners are an odd bunch and fairly rare, so I was just curious how many others are out there are owned by a Newf and how many of those strange people bought their Newfs a Cummins Ram? You know, so you don't have to turn their airconditioner off when going up a steep grade, or something to pull their boat with and haul all two thousand pounds of their comfort gear along when you go camping, or travel a hundred miles once a month to buy their monthly supply of dog food (fresh ground meat and organic veggies  ) or maybe you got the quad-cab long bed with a top of the line cap and BedRug to haul them around in only to decide that these loving, slobbering beautiful beasts belong in the cab, sliming the windows, and woofing their brains out every time they pass a body of water (to include the county public swimming pool). So few will ever know or even understand the pleasures of life when it includes sharing it with Newfys. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

A friend of mine is a breeder of them, he has 18 in his house!!. He is a serious show nut, his have one some major awards, he offered me one a while back, my house is too small though.

EMDIESEL, you would be surprised how small a house a Newf can be comfortable in. Small dogs are usually high activity dogs. Newfs like to go for a swim, a walk and lot's of snoozing. Preferably on your couch and on your lap.

I have a puppy that's part Newf. She also has German shepherd, Husky, and Wolf... ... . a real mutt!!

Seriously though, she looks like a Newf, but her head is shaped like a Wolf's head.

At her 5 week vet visit, she weighed 10 lbs. (Already almost twice the size of my wifes Chihuahua)

At her 10 week visit, she weighed 20 lbs!! Right now she's 13 weeks, and probibally close to 15 lbs.

Another week or two, I wont have to bend down to pet her!

She's very smart. Kind of psycho too!:D

I brought her to Barnegat bay. I'm not sure if she likes water yet.

Eric

PS nps, that must have been a gut full!:D

Newf nailed it on the big dogs, kinda like newborns... eat, sleep, I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER. My house is not anything that you would consider large, about 2200 sq. ft. , none the less, the Saints usually just ly around, lookin' and droolin'. Every once in a while, they decide to wrestle, him Vs. her. LMAOF, every see 320 lbs. of dog break dance in your livingroom ? Not for the faint of heart or those with priceless china nearby, the last time they had a good match, no holds barred mind you, they jumped onto a couch with enough force to break two legs off of same. My wife did this   while I did this  :D  .

i still like the article that i read about the dogs that survived the titanic sinking. two were lapdogs on the lifeboats and the third was a newfoundland , owned by a first officer. as the story goes, "rigel stayed behind with the ship. he was swimming in circles, desperate to find his master. at the same time, the SS carpathia was speeding to the scene to search for survivors. in the darkness no one saw the loaded lifeboat directly in its path. rigel swam between the lifeboat and rescue ship, barking loudly, until the captain heard the barks and ordered all engines stopped. the dog then guided the the lifeboat through the night to safety. once on board, rigel seemed physically unaffectedby his ordeal. he stood with paws on the rail barking futilityfor his lost master until he was taken below for food and medical attention. " i think that is the inborne nature of the breed that my wife and i have come to love. this story is one of many about newfs that are sometimes hard to believe {like the one about a drowning deaf person the a newf just happened to "hear " and rescue as he floated by in a swollen river in tenn} as i sit hear and type this, i cant help but think about the day when its time to say goodbye to the big man. its going to be one of the worst days of my life. but i know that the next one that comes to us will possess the same beautiful traits that make these dogs so special. "whose honest heart , his master's own, who lives, labours, breathes for him alone, ask not for whom these stones arise, ive one friend and here he lies" :)

There is another story about a Newf named Boo, who is famous in northern California. In fact they did a remake of the story with an interview of the rescuee (his name is Link Hill). Link was dredging for Gold as a hobby on the Yuba river. Boo, on the other hand was down river with his owner fetching a stick from a calmer area and carrying on as any 11 month old Newf puppy would during his first visit to the water.

Link was reaching up on a rock for a little plastic gas can and lost his footing, falling into the river only to be swept away by the swift current of the Yuba River. After fifteen minutes of struggling Link was redy to give up and let the Yuba claim another.

Boo was lying on the shoreline munching on his captured stick when his owner noticed him drop the stick and start staring out at the river. (Jesus, I'm getting misty) His owner couldn't see anything and wondered what caught his attention. Suddenly, Boo lept into the water and swam out into the middle of the river. Boo's owner then saw a mans hand reach out from the raging rapids, and she called for him to grab onto the dog. (starting to lose it. . . ) Link was amazed that at the point of giving up, suddenly there was this giant black Dog trying to save him! He grabbed hold of Boo and was pulled to the shore and out of the grasp of the Yuba, and death. Link lay on the shore and Boo's master asked if there was something she could do to help. Link motioned to her and she realized that he was a deaf mute. She realized that Link, couldn't call for help and didn't hear

her calling for him to grab onto Boo. Boo's natural instinct saved his life.

There was a remake of this story that appeared on Animal Planet. I have it on video tape because it hits close to home for us. You see, My Brown Newf is a water rescue fanatic and one of the best in the country. She comes by it naturally though, Boo is her Uncle. (Da**it, I've lost it  ) The Dog that played Boo for the remake is Trinity Bays Black Storm, Maggie's Dad (Our black female Newf)

Packman, being the Newf lover you and your wife are, I will make you a copy of the tape as soon as I get my VCR fixed (replaced)

small world

limo, thats what helped my wife and i to take the dive and get a newf. we were in the process of deciding whether we could handle he resp of such a large dog. after seeing animal planet, well, that clinched it. an indirect thank you.

Just so that those that happen upon this thread get a chance to see the amazing beasts that we speak so fondly of, I am posting a picture of two of my Newfs. Henna, of course is the brown (Ebontides Nemesis in Bronze) and Maggie Rose ( Ebontides' Comin' up Roses). The other is Zac, our Doberman. Our Newfy's have created the worlds first Doberman Retriever. Since he is negatively buoyant he requires a life vest, else he would (and has) sink like a rock.
