Nothing is too loud!!!! You should let people know what you have roaring under the hood, and not just by smoke!!!! Cut that little sucker off and be LOUD AND PROUD!!!!! :D

You get a loud droan under a load that becomes pretty annoying. The muffler does a good job of lessening the droan but still sounds good.

My (now educated) opinion: too loud!

It's not bad on the open highway, but in town the sound bounces off everything. Even though it might be legal, I think it's still a cop magnet waiting to happen.

I'm running the JRE straight piped ... . call Ted and have him send you the correct length of pipe to remove the muff ... . the noise level is not that bad ... . unless you punch it in lower gears. The level of noise annoyance seems to be the worst at around 2200 RPM.

I don't have a drone at highway speeds. Also, I was concerned the noise level would be unbearable with a load - not the case.

I say ... go for it!

PS ... I've been straightpiped for some time now ... . only attracted the attention of the local law enforcment folks once ... . that was about 2 weeks ago. After I got all the VA codes about illegal exhaust systems recited to me ( truck registered in Illinois ) I pointed out to the nice officer the truck was a diesel ... . the look on his face was priceless ... . he told me to have a nice evening and sent me on my way ... .

I have mine straight piped from the resonator back and I must admit before I had done it, I was concerned it would be too loud. However, IMHO, in my opinion, the noise levels in the cab aren't tremendously different than stock and my wife even agrees! ;)

As you can tell, it really is going to depend on what you like. When you were in High School, if you put a set of duals and glasspacks on your truck, you will probably like straight piped. If you don't like makin' a little noise, it will probably drive you crazy. I've been straight piped for some time now. I ran the 3" stright piped for a year and a half and just now went to 4" straight. I actually find the 4" to be a little quieter than the 3".

The noise may bounce off everything in town, but it sounds best bouncing off maxipads and flowerpokes as you fly by them!:-laf :-laf Just my opinion. And also, why not be seen as well as heard?! :D

the 4" systems are a lot deeper than the 3" and are quieter under lighter throttle. the problem is that judging the noise in the cab is a bad way of doing it. sit in the passenger side while driving down the road (load on the motor) and you'll hear how loud it really is. it's very hard to tell from being in the cab until you drive by a wall or something that reflects the noise. i have a flow through muffler, but a 4" piece of pipe inside of it sounds great as i much prefer it over my old 3" straight pipe (due to it being much quieter under light throttle and the deeper tone isn't as harsh as the 3"):D

From all the trucks I've heard (including my own)... 24v trucks are louder than 12v trucks (when taking advice from a 12v'er). And you do get a drone.

It is louder, but then again I'm still young so "too loud" isn't in my dictionary yet. :D Let's just say that it turns heads... .

There is a drone right around 2200-2400, but with my 3. 54 I can run highway speeds and stay right under that level. Everything above and below that range stays pretty quiet in the cab (at least in the driver's seat).

When all is said and done on my truck, it'll have a 5" stright pipe. Anyone who thinks it's too loud can just cover their ears as I drive by them. :D

Your wife might not like it too much though. :(

I have the JRE 4" I ran it with the Walker flow through muffler and liked the sound but now I like it even better w/o the muffler. I don't think it's too loud but the tail pipe is far away. The only run in with the cops I've had is just a big smile and a thumbs up from the local authorities. :D In town it is louder than on the highway but that's the way I like it. No problems with drone either.

I have the 4" Jardine system from Pinnacle Performance (Jerry Jardine, Wyoming). I left it stock, with the Magnaflow straight through muffler for about a year. Then, after hearing what a straight piped truck sounded like one time too many, I couldn't stand it any longer and removed my muffler. I called Jardine, and they kindly sold me a 30" piece of straight pipe section belled at both ends to replace the muffler with.

Especially when the engine is cold, I get a tremendous in the cab drone from 2000 RPM up. It is quite annoying, even to me. I am going to try a 6 foot piece of 1 1/2" angle iron as a stiffener along side the pipe to see if that will help quench the standing wave that makes the drone. I absolutely do NOT want to go back to a muffler!!!!!

As has been mentioned, with the passengers window down and the sound reflecting off a wall back to my ears, I :D:D:D so bad, I get tears in my eyes and almost can't see to drive!

But..... if you really want to know how unreal it sounds, you simply can not get the true feel and sound from inside the beast. If you ever drag race, or at least have a friend drive the truck past you while you stand on the side walk and listen. Tell your buddy to accelerate past you, not necessarily WOT accelerate, but a good bit. That almost made me fall over when I had a friend drive my truck at the drag strip a couple months ago. I can't even begin to describe the sound.

All I can say is, if that sound doesn't absolutely convince you that straight piped is the way for you, then nothing will!!!

Tom

I have had a 4" straight now for about 20k+ and I love it. Do people say "your truck is loud"? Yes... ... ... ..... Do I care? NO! It is loud when I stomp on it for sure bounceing off all the houses but it brings nothing but :D to my face. If you think your garbage truck is too loud then dont switch it. But IMO its worth a shot. I am glad I did it. My wife says it sounds just like a "FRikkin SEMI" Oo. Oo.

Old saying applies here maybe... .

"If Its Too loud,Your To Old"

Or my sons explanation... .

"Heavy Isn't Loud,Heavy Is Attitude"

So you know "Heavy" is what my son and his teenage friends call my truck. They all say the truck has alot of attitude like that and if I think of reinstalling the muffler it will disappear in the middle of the night AGAIN.

Ya know,I hear about this "drone" all the time when it comes to exhaust and one only has to wonder if those who comment on it being to much to handle were looking for a car to drive instead. :D :D :D... ..... Andy
