Just curious as to who out of the stock guys has the most miles of trouble free service on their auto trannies and how much they tow (or if they tow really).

I do not want to read any rants about the transmission or any ads for DTT or ATS as I already have mine taken care of. My goal here is to see just how bad the stock auto transmission is with a stock engine in front of it.

Thanks

auto trany

My 98 1/2 2500 have 100K and is use as a dilevery truck for RV's so it is almost all towing miles.

I have have a complete trany service done twice, but that is it.

I do have 4. 10 rear end, which helps kept pump pressure up and tranys seem to last longer with 4. 10's

Pop's transmission

Has about 145K on it. Used in part-time farm work, pulling tractors, rolled hay, etc.

It won't do a "passing gear" downshift, but I haven't tried to fix that yet. And it's a lowly 160, but I don't think the juice has ever been changed.

He's wanting some more power, so I'll bet we junk the transmission pretty quick.

Friend of mine here in Cheyenne has a '91 first gen with the auto. He has around 190k on it. He has a pacbrake and pulls overloaded all the time. We use it for four-wheelin' and pulling loads of logs out of the mountains on 4x4 roads. He and I can't figure out how it still works as well as it does, but we're not complaining either.

60,000 and still doing fine

I've got 60,000 on mine and it's still doing fine.

It's my only transportation so I use it to drive back and forth to work 70 miles each day and tow an 8,000 lbs enclosed trailer on the weekends. I drive it hard, set the cruise on 80mph in overdrive and let her down shift whenever she feels the need to. I hope the transmission blows before the 100k warranty blows then I will DTT it.

Replaced clock spring at 35k

Replace driver side front axle seal twice, actually replaced seal first time then they replace the axle and seal the second time.

Replaced transmission fluid/filter and differential lube at 33k and 55k

Just changed the front pads at 55k

Just rotated the tires for the first time at 55k, still look good will replace before winter hits. Michelin 265 70 16

I bought an EZ and used it for 2 weeks, it caused by converter to shudder so I sold it. It pulls my trailer at 80 everywhere I go and that all I need it to do. I've got a race car don't need a race truck even though I would like one... ha

2001 2500, 4x4, Quad, SB, Auto, bone stock

One of my buddies went 75,000 with a Edge Comp before it blew

One of my buddies 2001 3500 went 75,000 with a Edge Comp on it most of its life and he raced it every where, empty or pulling a 20,000 lbs tractor. transmission shuddered all day long for 60,000 miles before it gave up the ghost. He broke the input shaft in half pulling a 12,000 enclosed trailer, not aggressively, just normal acceleration.

The transmission was actually in perfect condition it was the converter that gave it up. They tore the transmission down and it looked perfect, they could still read the numbers/lettering on the clutches. The dealer said the trannies are tuff, its the converters that suck. Said this is the same converter they've been using since 1991...

They had several converters laying on the floor, all of them were a golden bronze color like they had been heat treated.

He got it in on Monday and he picked it up Tuesday evening with a new transmission and new converter. He did pull the Comp out just so they wouldn't ask about it but it's not that hard to do.

I don't think 75,000 is bad as hard as he drove it. He raced it at the drags all the time. I don't think he ever had it on less than the 3x3 setting for 60,000 miles.

I have a buddy that has 225,000 on his stock transmission he doesn't use it to pull a lot but does haul horses around and rodeos so it has some hard miles.

I have a 99 QC 4X4 112,000 and no transmission problems(knock on wood)all hwy,no load 90% and 10% pulling a 4,000lb travel trailer. Lots of start & stops as I use my completley stock truck to inspect jobsites in a 200mi radius. I am into overkill and service my transmission every 15,000mi and my eng. @ 3,000mi my pickup makes its own wage and I put it back in. I am afraid that Dodge may not stand up to the block that cummins has the reputation for as I do about 30k per yr. I put 250k on a chevy1500 4X4 and sold it with nothing except 4 starter replacements in 8yrs. So far I have lost a lift pump @60k(warranty), put new striker plates in my starter @ 110k(for the price of a $5. 00 aftermarket kit & my labor 2. 00hrs), and now I am about to replace my APPS unit. It will probably end up costing me about $600. 00 as the part price was $438. 00 out the door from the STEALER. I am not liking the situation so far as the old chevy treated me much better financially. But I guess we live & learn... . Steve in Ca.

Before I bought my first CTD, a 97 5 spd, I talked to as many hotshotters on the CB as I could while traveling, lots. Almost without exception they used autos as they did not think the 5 spds held up as well. Several of my friends in the pipeline construction trade had also traded in manuals for autos. I wanted the auto first but made a spur of the minute purchase and there were none in stock at the time. I liked the 97 and had no problems in 114,000 miles but wanted more comforts. Bought a 2001 quad cab, auto, 4X4, with all the goodies and am very happy with it as well, except for milage, it has 4:10 axles. I'm box stock. I pull a 15,000# fiver when I do pull and have no reason to do anything but normal service. Only 30,000 miles on the new one so far.

If I were pulling more than not I'd go with the 6 spd HO but wouldn't dream of giving up my auto on any other terms.
