I agree Partyat33, but sometimes we get thrown into a position that isn't the most desirable with no quick way out. That's when we start hating it :(

I spent 30 years of my life working for Chrysler, standing in the

same place, doing the same job. And i had to drive a 100 miles

a day to do it. The best part of the job was the drive.

Retired 5 years ago and love it.

Frank

At 41 years of age, I can't see myself doing this for the rest of my life. I will if I have to, and be grateful I have it, but would like to look for something more fulfilling once the opportunity presents itself.

Sorry, Party at 33, but I gotta side with Doc on this one. :) Some of us end up in places we hadn't exactly planned on, but are still grateful we have it. Money means nothing if your work doesn't fulfill you.

Henry David Thoreau, the writer, said it best. "Most men lead lives of quiet despair. "

I like my job, I like most of the people I work directly with (1 idiot), but like some others have mentioned its the politics that can be a real pain.

I've just never thought I would look good with a brown nose.....

Tom, Doc,

I would certainly agree people some times end of up jobs they don't like, due to whatever circumstances.

I have always believed like this:

Like your job

Find a way to like your job

or

change jobs

if you can't do the last item, look at the middle one again.

Thats just my way of looking at it.

My philosophy has been if don't like your work enough to do it for free you're doing the wrong thing. Work is too much of a percentage of your life for it to be something you hate. Almost like being married to someone you hate, a waste of time.

I'm working on it Dennis. The new job isn't what I set out to do all my life, but I'll manage. At least long enough to retire. At one time I thought that working in the computer field would be nice, but now that it's not a hobby, I've found that it's not so sweet. Oh well, tomorrow's another day, who knows what miracles are in store along the way. I must say that I've seen my share of miracles, so I'll sit tight and wait for the next one.

I'm required to do many things that are illegal and unsafe.

I have a license to protect, and the state has been called in to address these issues in the past, by past employees. The inspectors leave the place with a fatter pocket, and everything stays the same.

Now our boiler insurance company is investigating, but I'm afraid things will not change.

When the place blows up, I hope I'm not there.

Oh BTW I found all this out AFTER I was hired.

The only good thing about my job, other than pay day, is seeing it in my rearview mirror.

Eric

I mostly like my job. As long as I am on the boats, I can terminate or otherwise hold accountable folks who don't carry their weight. Just can't be on the boats all the time, then you have to play government bs.

Andy . .

On the boats??? or ships?? Fellow shallow water sailor ...

terminate? brutal in this day and age. Accountable ... depends on where you are and who you know ...

Life is good

Feel free to PM me

I don't really like everyting about my job but the positives , good $$ and two weeks a month not working, outweight the negatives which are having to be out of town and away from my family, girlfriend and truck the other two weeks.

If your job makes your life unbearable find a different one. You only get one life and you might as well be as happy as possible. The short term pain of finding a job you like will pay off in a much better life.

The patriot (Eric) - your situation sounds grim. You do realize that there is a federal wistleblower program. If it is that unsafe and dangerous do someting, don't become a statistic.

I dont want to make it sound like I'm being tortured. I DO get payed well.

It's just that I've worked other places(doing the same job) and if you left your equipment, you'd be fired!!That's the law here.

And the equipment here is far more complex than the other places I've worked.

When you go away from the plant to help someone working on something, and it's an occasional thing, at YOUR disgression, OK.

When it's expected of you (read forced upon you) to leave the plant for sometimes an hour or more, regularly, that's another story completely.

Eric

What I'm best at(goofing off), isn't a paying position(unfortunately). Still, that said, I kinda like driving around the country. I have control over when I work(important to me). And while I'll never get rich, I usually make decent money. I'm happy enough that I'm not actively pursuing a change of occupation. Besides, I'm not sure that I could do a 9-5 5 days a week deal. So I'll stick with this.

COAL MINER AN PROUD OF IT!!!!!

Every time I start to think about how bad my job is. I try to remember my grandfather going into the coal mines at the age of 13,on his knees pick'n at a coal seem. [45years] Did this while paying off 80 acker dairy farm 35 head. That means milking 5am before going to the mine:eek: Just to make sure no one in his faimly would be born in a company owened house like he was.

I drive concrete truck[I'AM A PUSS}

Owner/operator

I love being an owner/operator (glorified driver, lol)

what I hate is that the cut throat nature of trucking has caused rates to fall to the point that you can not make a profit on some runs. My biggest customer cut rates fron $2. 50/ton to $1. 95/ton this has affected my bottom line to the tune of $847 per WEEK. Thats $44,000 less annualized. Truck insurance has doubled in the past year (clean driving record, btw)

I am thankful that diesel has come back down to reality.

I am thankful to be doing what I have wanted to do since "Career Day" in 4th grade. I have never lost sight of my goal to get there.

I do present a professional image out there, and most customers really like me, but I can't stand the ones with the pre-conceived notion that I am a Truck driver and therefore am ignorant, ect. .

Do what you like and like what you do

My father told me that years ago and it is very solid advice, I am in a job that is very challenging and also very rewarding, something new everyday, this helps, I have always said I couldnt do the same same stuff day in and day out , I know I am lucky in that situation. My wife told a friend one time that if you are not happy here than you wont be happy anywhere, makes sence to me. I think there are alot of excellent jobs out there, I would bet that if a poll were taken that most people are happy with their jobs but I would bet that if disgruntled it would be because its of the politics, I for one am very satisfied with my job however I am frustrated with the politics that take place everyday. I think its everywhere, its something one has to deal with, My wife works at the same plant I do , she is the secretary to the adminstrator or the plant manager so she is in a high position and deals with all walks of the job and I think she is the roll model of how to deal with politics, she is very professional, I have heard from her many political games and how she handles it is she does not complain one bit unless asked by her boss and even then she does not put anyone down , just the idea or the task. she will do the job in a professional manner and even if it was the wrong thing to do she will do as asked and than mgt will see its the wrong approach or idea and they will adjust and move on , she than assists in the right move . Some times mgt comes to her and asks her oppinion or view as they value her input in a huge way. They trust her in the way she deals with things. Let me give one example. there is another secretary that has been there longer and is also well liked but is bossy and steps on alot of toes. well the phone duties are my wifes priority , well this other gal is very nosie and sometimes would pickup the incomming calls after 2 rings if my wife didnt answer, and no one really wants to talk to this gal because she is so nosie so it became a big deal and was noticed by mgt and the big wigs tried to stop it but was unsuccesful, after 6 months of this it got real bad , to the point of the other gal picking up while my wife was at her desk. so my wife came up with a heck of an idea and got mgt to buy off on it , she ordered a porta phone that has vibrate instesd of a ring ,now my wife gets all incomming calls and the other gal dont even know its happening. Mgt was tickeled pink because they solved a problem and no one had to **** anyone off.

I guess what I am saying is politics suck bad and we may think we are right but the guy on the other end is thinking the same thing about us , so in my oppinion it is best not to cause enemies but use intregrity to simply show the other person they are wrong ,and if they cant see it than move on and dont rock the boat, its hard to bite your tongue but sometimes we just gotta say WTF... ... ... ... ... ... ... . Kevin

Kevin, great point and good outlook on the whole situation. I am definately going to make a more concerted effort at exactly that in my next job.

I guess I can honestly say that I have learned that the $ part of the job really isn't everything. While in high school, college, and grad. school, it seemed that everyone was so focused on the $ and getting the perfect job. I guess now that I've had moderate sucess in 'corporate america' I really wish I would have taken a different approach. All the politics, backstabbing, and ignorant people that are hired and promoted has turned me sour against work. I have seen this in at least 4 different places I've worked. I cannot understand how all these people just 'sit' in front of their computers all day! It drives me nuts! I am seriously putting some plans together to start my own business. I've always wanted to be my own boss, and work in an agricultural setting, so I'm going to go for it! My wife knows how discouraged I am, and agrees that as long as we can survive, we don;t require all the extras. I hope it's the right choice, because I'd hate to go back to corporate america!
