Just wondering if anyone that's towing with a 3. 73 rear gear, has decided that a 4. 10 would have been better to have. Most dealers seem to stock only trucks with the 3. 73, so I'm wondering if having to order a truck would be worth all the hassel of going thru a dealer. This would be with a automatic transmission.

FWIW, I tow with my manual trans and 3. 73's. It's still geared too low for me, I'm stepping up to larger tires.

I have 4. 10s a six speed and 35" tires and it is still way too low. I am considering going to an overdrive unit or new gears to gain some MPG on the highway. The other option is to go with a lift kit large enough to accomidate 37" tires. If I do that I won't be able to hall a camper or get anthing out of the bed unless I have a step latter. Let alone get be MPG.

I have a auto w/3. 73 gears and tow a 32. 5 high profile ( around 12,000 lbs) 5th wheel. I like how it tows and can't say that I would like 4. 11 gears. I like the fuel mileage that I get with 3. 73 it would be less with the 4. 11 gears. Oo.

I have the 3. 73 rear and pull an 18K fiver with the 6-speed. I am very pleased with the gearing. I thought about the 4. 10, but spend more time unloaded than towing, so went for better mileage. We have pulled all over western USA and had no problems.

I have a 6 speed G56 w/ 3. 73's, which is about the same as 4. 10's with the other transmission's. I sure have plenty of power, but I could use some more gear for highway running. I guess if I was really heavy, like waaaaay over GVWR heavy then the gearing I have would be good. But my fuel mileage suffers at freeway speeds. I can climb most grades in 6th, never had to go lower than 5th... .

I have 3. 54s and 35" tires with a 6 speed and would not want any other gears. Plenty of power to pull 11K#.

well I went with the 4. 10 gears and auto for the extra 'umph' and it does great ... for empty driving and such however, the 3. 73 or 3. 54 gears would be better (or get larger tires, since I run 265s now)

:)

35,000 miles w/ 3. 73's and an auto and happy! Half of those are towing. Still not happy with the fuel economy of the 06 though. Talked to some others w/ 06's and all have been about the same as me or worse. My 99 was much better in MPG dept!

Guys,

I have both gears mentioned, so I feel as if I can speak to this a little. My 01 6 speed with 3. 73's has always been first choice to pull our 12,000 lb 5er. It pulls it all day with no add on other than a chip and does just fine. There are some grades i "MAY" need to shift down into 5th gear with but not often. It is for me the preferred truck for the 5er. The other truck is a 02 6 speed with 4. 10's. this truck also does a very good job with the 5er but seems a little , how do I say this? Different. It never needs to be down shifted or at least almost never and a real funny thing about this 4. 10 geared truck it has always from the time it was new gotten 3 or 4 miles to the gallon "BETTER" milage than the 3. 73 truck. That is loaded or empty it just does get better milage. but even with that said it just about drives me crazy driving it empty on the highway. it sounds like it is wound so tight it is going to pop, maybe I notice the difference because I have both geared trucks.

Don't even think about 3:73's and an auto if you will be towing 8K or more.

If you are planing on never towing in O/D and want to use 3rd only that will work.

If you drive allot of empty highway miles the 3:73's work well also.

I have 4. 10's and 315's I am wondering if I need to get a smaller tire next time around. It seems to put it out the RPM range IF I tow any where near 55 or so, she seems a lil more content around 65-68ish (1800-1900 RPM). I don't like towing that fast so I may go back down to a 285 or a 295.
