What companies make a diesel SUV. As of now, I need to get a diesel SUV for my wife and I insist on getting a SUV for her. Here in California I can't buy a diesel SUV beucase of emmisions and sulfur problems. I can buy out of state however I was wondering if anyone had ever owned a diesel SUV, or had any recommendations for companies that make them. Thanks for the info.

If you go for this sort of thing, I believe that Mercedes is going to start offering their diesel in the M-Class SUV model. I don't really like the looks of them but whatever. I haven't heard much about the Jeep Liberty's diesel, but I think it could be a cool combination.

Looking For Used Or New?

Doesn't matter. I didn't know that the Excursion wouldn't be made with a diesel anymore. That is wierd.

Mercedes sounds like it might be nice to have. I also heard that the Touareg by VW will be coming out in a diesel. Is that true?

Yup

yep. . i've seen many of them on the roads up here in canada... sticker price is way much though... nearly double my trucks price... they are quiet though. there was one idling next to me at a set of lights and i could barely hear it over my own engine. but you could hear the turbos spool up when it accelarated. . :D

A number of years back Isutsu (sp?) used to offer their station wagon with a diesel engine.

The first vehicle I ever bought was a 1965 Land Rover with a diesel engine, and that vehicle is still operated by my brother. Note however, that that vintage of Land Rover diesel engine mounted the rotary injection pump vertically just like a spark distributor, and I found that the crossed helical drive from the cam shaft to the vertical shaft operating the oil pump on the bottom and the rotary injection pump at the top could not stand up to the oscillatory forces and as the two crossed gears wore the injection timing would go south.

VW is having all kinds of problems with the Touareg's... some of them have check engine lights on as they drive them off the delivery truck at the dealership.

What's interesting is that the Porsche Cayenne (the Touareg's sibling) has fewer issues.

Despite the issues... I'd love to own a Touareg TDI, but they're still a $60,000 used vehicle at this point.

They used to make full-sized diesel Blazers. Do they still make them in whatever the Blazer replacement is now? Tahoo?

The last year for the diesel Tahoe/Yukon was 96, and either 99 or 00 for the diesel Suburban. There is a company in the Denver area that puts the Duramax into late model Suburbans; but the conversion runs close to $70k I heard.

You must want one of those really bad for $50k. I wonder what this guy is going to do if GM starts to produce Dmax Suburban/Tahoes in '06?

Jeep Liberty with the VM Motori, Italian diesel. It has 2. 5 Liters with 160 HP and 295 foot pounds of torque. Rated at 5000 lbs tow capacity it is a little noisy but seems to hold together well. We have sold about 35 of these and no major problems reported. With rebates you are looking in the $24,500 range.
