Question about Dodge driveline parts in 73-87 Chevy

Bread Truck question

I have a 2000 Ford Excursion 4X4 with a V-10, automatic. I am keeping the 4r100 automatic and going to have it built for this application. Who makes the adapter to mate my 5. 9l CTD to the Ford automatic. I have seen fordcummins.com, but is there anybody else that has the adpaters.

Also if there are any other makers of parts - motor mounts, brackets and such that would be helpful also, along with anybody that has pictures or helpful hints, tricks on what to look out for.

I have done a swap into a Chevy before, but not a Ford.

Have you contacted Kenny yet at Autoworld? He has completed numerous ford conversions. 406 727 8915 Autoworld hi lo truck truck shop. (check the f-550 cummins conversion thread thats currently running now for their most recent work.

I wouldn't use the v-10 auto, too much trouble to make it work verses just finding a dodge auto and putting a aftermarket controller on it. The ford transmission has a rather extensive ECM controller involved in its shifting. Anything is possible, its just a question of what you want to spend your money on and how many times before you can consider it reliable.

Dawna told me the exact same thing about the Ford transmission with the CTD in front of it. Better off with the Dodge transmission. I'm gearing up to do a 24Valve into a 2000 4x4 Excursion as soon as I find an engine and transmission combo.

So what is involved in the dodge auto to ford transfer case?

Not much, flange plate is the same in most, along with the bolt pattern. Spline coupler is usually the biggest adaptation part. Some of the dodge transmission's allow for fluid to free flow between the transmission and the transfer case, so you may have to address the seal in the output. Without having the exact model of both transmission and transfer case, it is just guess work to speculate the differences.

The easiest solution is to put all dodge parts in the excursion and just adapt the driveshafts, along with the signal sensors to correspond with the ford. Given the choice, I would install a Gear vendors overdrive unit and let them deal with the electronics as they reconfigure the outputs to whatever vehicle you are putting their units into. On the Ford's they usually use the differential housing ABS sensor to pick up speedo signal so it isn't a big deal, you just need to know how the specific vehicle is equipped.

Ford's are known for varying their configurations of things even on same model years. Just one more way to keep a mechanic guessing on things unless you hae a working knowledge of the specific platform on a day to day basis.

I give up, its not worth the effort anymore.

Some people just can't take the time to read the posts from the beginning of the thread :(

We've got to keep helping these guy's and keep them going in the right direction. :-laf

Totally agree, I'm just not in the mood to delete all the flames I got the previous times from my personal email box. Someone else needs to take the torch on the deal for a while. If I had the time, I would attach references to each and every thread that references his website, I don't though, Caveat Emptor is all I can say. Search my previous posts on the issue and link them here, that should be enough to persuade newbies to read more before sending their money out across the web for crappy duplicated parts.

OK, Let me get this straight, is it that FordCummins.com is the JRE/Banks of the Conversion guys :-{} , or is it because I missed the part of the post with the reference to FordCummins.com? Maybe I just should not dare to tread here and put up with DC's Rusty Doors, never mind the Ford Stuff :p Moose00

There is alot of talk around here of poeple who disagree with FordCummins being THE place to go for conversion parts for obvious reasons. By no means should you stick with the Dodge if you want a Cummins. This engine works very well in other applications.

Stick with the ford drivetrain.

It would be better to stick with the Ford transmission, t-case than to put the Dodge stuff in. You can get a stand alone controller for the 4R100 for about $400 and it works awesome.

Don't take this as an issue to get mad about. I only have a factory Dodge cummins 4wd because at the time I bought it, I needed a turn key diesel truck that had an extended cab for our newborn son's car seat. I had just finished over a year of visits to the hospital an allergic reaction and blood poisoning from direct skin contact with synthetic fluid/ Dettron ATF. I was working with With Kenny and Dawna at the time and was forbidden by both my wife and the doc to touch the stuff until the tests were completed. Only due to this circumstance did I go with a dodge as a tow rig. Given any choice in the matter, I would have repowered an Excursion with a 12 valve as a solution. The cab on my '96 is falling apart, the driveline has 260,000 miles and is still pulling like an elephant. Sheetmetal and fitment wise, my '96 is the weakest, most loose piece of crap I have ever owned,(outside of a Dodge Omni for 4 months of High School, go figure, both Chryslers :( ) The day Ford puts a cummins, Cat, or Detroit engine in their trucks in the inline 6 configuration is the day I walk away from my dodge with no regrets other than car payments. Til then, A repower is the only thing I see as an affordable option for a used diesel truck. ($40,000 and up for a new diesel pickup is just madness in my eyes, I can buy a low mileage MDT or a Class 8 tractor for that).

I have little experience with the new body style Dodge, so I won't critique them beyond the sheetmetal being just as thin if not thinner than my '96. Hopefull the cab redesign has made a difference in longevity. Only time will tell on that one.

The issue with Ford repowers using cummins has nothing to do with either the engine or the Ford truck. It is strictly in the website you posted to it. If you have some time, do a search of the archived posts here and look for any posts I submitted regarding it. There are more than a few that will enlighten you. No one is trying to shoulder you out here, the post is only in regard to this one issue. Posting up websites you have no knowledge of their background and recommending them as you did is the only thing I as well as others in this thread are addressing. The problem is, it gives new readers the impression you somehow or another are endorsing the site, which only leads to another victim in the future. Hope you get it now. Like I said, nothing personal.
