Check out this old timey train. I think it's incredible that no lubrication is required for the crank bearing or the bevel gearing at the trucks!

That is a "SHAY" locomotive. They were designed for logging and narrow gauge line use. They wernt designed for speed but for low speed power and seldom went over 30-40mph due to poor track conditions, steep grades and tight turns. I am not sure but I think the primary lubrication was by the engineer with his long spout pump oil can.
 
looks neat. i'd like to see one in person someday. doesn't look like there is too much movement in the driveshaft avalable when the truck articulates around a bend
