I have a 2001 3500 4x4 w/hydro boost brakes that has a shot steering gearbox, and pump. The gearbox started leaking quite awhile ago, has gotten a lot worse lately, and the pump is starting to howl now. Can't complain since I have 327,000+ on them. Checked with a local NAPA and they have the gearbox, but they said they don't list the pump. He also thought that was pretty odd. I didn't doubt him since he has been on top of the other parts / questions in the past. I plan on going with a stok type gearbox due to cost, and life I got from the original unit.

Haven't found a thread on here for pump purchasing yet.

So, my question is who has the best pump, at the best price?

Thanks

Napa does have the pump with or without the reservoir in a rebuilt unit. I would recommend a new pump v/s rebuilt. Same thing for the box, new v/s rebuilt.

I went with the napa pump and a redhead steering box. So far so good on both though it has only been about 18-20k

Avoid A1-Cardone! I have had their PS pumps burn up on the alignment rack 30 min after install while dusting the system with metal debris. Then their junk has had seals blow on the box, bad pumps out of the box... 5 PS pumps on one ride with an inline filter all ruined. 3 failures required changing the hydro booster and box as well as flushing the rest of the system from debris/ metal dust.

The advice for a new PS pump is solid. If you can't do that hit a junkyard - you will have better luck than a 'painted to look new' rebuild.

Adding a 3/8" MAGNEFINE in line power steering filter will help the life of the system esp after a repair. (I like it because it is a big filter vs. the small jokes that plug and bypass quickly others offer.) Install on the return line from the steering unit ONLY! If you install it on the hydro booster return line it can delay the release of the brakes due to return line restriction. (I did not check to see if Gino's has this.)

Thanks for the input. I need to get on this soon since it always seems to be when the truck is down is when I need it the most.

Power Steering Specialists; Westerville, Ohio. The first rebuild gear I installed lasted 11 years; it's failure was probably helped by the rusted-solid steering shaft. I've no complaints with the replacement gear I installed 2-3 years ago.

I expect they make their pumps just as exactingly.

Got a 98.5 with 266,000. 35" tires and 4" lift, steering box brace. It's getting a Redhead steering box, OEM steering shaft, Borgenson high flow pump, new hoses and new vacuum pump seals. I talked with a buddy that ownes a diesel repair shop that told me to flush the complete system first, replace everything and then flush it again. I'm going to use John Deere transmission fluid to flush and Redline c+4 trans fluid to run. I got the pump, hoses, and seals from Genos.

If you are going to replace everything why flush? Pump, hoses and box, that all there is.

PS: On second thought, I think you have a hydraboost on your pickup that would need flushed.

Nick, kindly disregard that comment, I remember now that the previous owner installed an OEM trans cooler in my power steering system. It is an OEM cooler and looks factory. I've had the truck so long I forgot they do not come from the factory like that.

Carry on :D

Did a little more investigation and my year uses power steering fluid and not trans fluid. I was told that the trans fluid was used in later years and not to mix them. You are correct about the hydra boost.
