Fuel Economy?

How would a I-4 diesel do with big displacement? The new 6. 7 is only . 1 liters smaller than a 6. 8L V-10 by Ford and I have driven those trucks and they are gutless. The only problem I would have with a V-6 or V-8 diesel is that the internal parts would be smaller wouldn't they and they would break a lot easier with heavy mods.
Diesel in a half ton would be great though. I have often thought of buying a single cab and shortening the frame to fit a short bed. That truck would rip!

That's the primary reason last I heard. You're not gonna get a guy out of a Hemi-powered truck that has less cylinders. Even though the common-rail ISBe170 4 cylinder would do the job admirably, probably get better fuel economy, last longer, and have virtually no development time. Oh well.

it wouldn't pass emissions though... and they'll be able to get twice the power out of the same engine weight in a little aluminum headed V engine

In this age of refined vehicles with smooth, low NVH engines a 4-cylinder diesel with enough displacement to develop the necessary power would have a tough time meeting those requirements.

If its efficient and powerful too... I wouldn't care if its a horizontal 16 cylinder boxer engine. Its a diesel is good enough for me.

But in reality... the Cummins 4cyl would have been a wonderful engine. Just being a 4cyl that is totally capable says alot about diesel power.

Nissan might be getting the Cummins too then... since Dodge will be building their Titan trucks now.

Four-bangers have too much vibration, which means counterbalancers, which means weight, which means you have to add more displacement. It's the law of diminishing returns.

A V8 or V6 provides much smoother power for its displacement, which works in light duty vehicles like half tons and autos.

Although I love the simplicity of the ISB 6, it wouldn't work as well in a half ton, even if you lopped two cylinders off. The new engines will have a more broad, gasoline-styled power band, and will be lighter and more fuel efficient than the huge chunk of iron I have.

I bet they're excellent engines, despite the added hassle of emissions and extra cylinders. They'll also make a 6. 7L 4th Gen look like a breeze to work on.
