I'm a 2nd G guy and am always checking on Ebay for turbo deals and the 6. 7 vg turbos are always there, cheap to moderate. Are they take-offs for bigger turbos? Failed units? WHAT GIVES?

Some of them are good units that someone took off for an upgrade. I would bet that 90% are ones that a dealer took off and replaced under warranty. Not sure if Cummins takes back the bad turbos. They might. That would be worth researching. If Cummins does take the old ones back, then maybe all the ones on e-bay are not bad. Just curious, but why do you want a VGT?

Oh I'm not interested in buying one, just thought it was kinda weird. That was a thought I had, all thoses mechanics taking the warrenty turbos home then selling them, makes you wonder if they were really bad, or they knew Dodge would buy it and they could pocket some cash.

Many years ago when I worked for International Harvester Co, the dealer had to keep all warranty parts. About every 6 weeks we would audit the warranty claims and scrap all parts that were not to be returned for inspection. We had to physically break the non-returned parts (big hammer and/or flame wrench) to make them totally unusable and they were sold by the dealer as scrap.

Dodge warranty parts are either called back or released to be scrapped. The only parts that I have noticed that were to be destroyed have been recall parts that were safety related such as ABS controllers, air bag controllers and the like

When I worked at a deere dealership we would not destroy those parts, we would set them back and sell them to minunites(sp) for cash, then divy up the cash.

You wouldn't be able to use one on a Gen II Ram even if the VGT was in pristine condition right out of the Cummins factory shipping box. The VGT is computer-controlled.

To run a VGT on a 03-07 you will need an ecm from an 07. 5-09. Banks had something on an aftermarket VGT for the 5. 9 common rails, but they used a Borg Warner turbo. Cummins does the variable so much better than the competition. Good luck on getting them to work on a 5. 9L.

Well I just saw a post today on another site about a guy that was offered 5 vg turbos for cheap, all warranty jobs. Oh and for those still confused (hbarlow), I'm not buying one, just asking a question.

If they are warranty, then they are junk. Too bad you can't rob any of the parts out of them. The bearing housings are different and nothing would match up on the compressor or turbine housing.

Always look at sellers rating, if they have 500-1000 sales and 100% positive feedback, they are careful what they sell, and always look at return policy, and use paypal, then if you dont receive item, paypal has coverage for you.

That won't work... ... ... ... a 6. 7 ecm will not work on an 03-07. ;)

Banks was supplied a stand alone controller from Holset on his Dakota

I can't agree with that... ... ... ..... because they are dirty and slow to react because of the fouling does'nt make them junk. Not that tough to open them up for a good cleaning.

Yeah, I know you can't cross the ECMs. That's why I said you would need a 6. 7 ecm. The turbos fail because the soot builds up on the intake housing and makes contact with the compressor wheel. You going to clean the fractures off a compressor wheel? If all they needed was cleaning then why would they replace the entire unit?

I have never come across your scenario... ... ... ..... but I have cleaned a few turbos ;)

I also stayed at a holiday inn :-laf:-laf
