Thumbs up for Larry B's starter contacts!

just gettin' ready to change the fluid in the dtt and transfer ...

made me wonder why atf in the transfer ...

why not a good quality full synthetic motor oil?

As a 6-speed owner I'd much prefer if the transmission and transfer case took the same fluid. You, owning automatics, already have that advantage.

I guess this is just their way of making sure the manual guys are getting the pleasure of buying the higher dollar ATF+4 also.

The transfere case has a tiny oil pump,with a very fine mesh for a screen,I think the pump and pickup may have problems with heavier oil in the cold. ATF also has friction modifiyers to help the synchronizers when shifting on the fly

Oh don't worry, we get the pleasure of buying the special lubricant for the NV5600 to the tune of 10 bucks a quart. :-{}

Try MTL

Redline MTL in my 6-speed and transfer case for 80K miles now. Both run cool and shift very well. MTL has a viscosity profile similar to 5W-30 oil and has substantial amounts of ZDDP anti-wear agents that are seriously lacking in ATF.

Generally speaking, the wet bath system does not require higher viscosity fluids and actually hampers the performance of the differential.

Remember, the transfer case has parts that have to fling that oil off. And this adds up to drag. Honestly, a very light machine oil would be fine, but ATF is so easy. I have even seen hydralic fluid used in transfer cases.

And you do NOT have to run +4 in the transfer case. Dump some +3 in there for a lot less money and it will work exactly the same!
