Guys, I hear all about everyone hitting 1300 to 1500 degrees on tehir EGT gauge. I wanna know why, why can I barely hit 1100 degrees with the Juice with Attitude on 3x5? You can see my mods in the sig. Nothing too serious, but people say they can do 1350 stock. Have my mods to help the truck breathe helped that much? My fuel filter is changed pretty regularly, the pressure gauge never goes below 7. 5 PSI at WOT, and the truck will blow some smoke so I don't think it's a lack of fuel? Not that I want high EGT, I just wanna know why I don't see them. /

My probe is mounted in the exhaust manifold.

Here there is a performance shop, where the owner, offered to have me come in and check my probe/gauge against his infrared thermometer. They are a TDR sponsor so I don't mind saying it was Rip at Source automotive. My advice is check our sponsors and see if any are close enough and would take the time to verify your gauge.

I don't know if this suggestion is even relevant but I had a similar symptom several years ago with my '01.

The engine would not produce full boost, would not produce the normal high egt, would not smoke under full throttle with Bosch 275hp MH injectors, and power was down. It turned out the MAP Sensor was bad. I think a mechanic cracked it accidentally when removing and reinstalling the starter. When the MAP sensor was replaced everything returned to normal.

Thanks for the idea. I am getting as high as 41 lbs boost on the Edge monitor though, and some decent smoke too. Would that sensor throw a code?

Just remeber that could be off too, my boost isn't consistent with my actual gauge, just my two cents. My temps are pretty close between the actual gauges and the attitude though.

... ... ... ... ..... Would that sensor throw a code?

I don't know. The '01 ECM was less sophisticated so it did not set a code. Maybe your '04. 5 would.

I pulled my old Airstream all the way home from NV with it running poorly. It would pull the trailer over the hills but was weak. If I had not been familiar with my truck and known what it was supposed to do and had gauges to prove it to myself the dealership service department would have refused to work on it. They tried to tell me there was nothing wrong with it because they couldn't find anything wrong. I have found that Dodge service managers and technicians often don't own a Dodge Cummins so they are not very familiar with the way they should perform and it makes it harder for them to recognize weak performance.

I finally called TDR members and editors Bill Stockard and Joe Donnelly and both, independently, suggested the MAP sensor. I called and talked to the service manager at a nearby Cummins service center. He didn't have a clue.

I returned to the local Dodge dealer and described the MAP sensor with what I had learned from Joe and Bill and the tech understood and believed me. He checked the tiny microvolt output of the MAP sensor and determined it was out of specified range. He replaced it and that solved my problem.

The good news was the young mechanic and I became good friends over that issue and he has done all my mechanic work, nights and weekends, for six years now. He has been a lifesaver (and money saver). I pay him well but not at the inflated dealer labor rates and we are both happy.
