IRS raiding CAT HQ .... Check it out!!!

Here in my hometown in Oklahoma I have noticed probably at least half of the diesel pickups, be it Chevy, Ford, or Dodge, are running without mufflers. What is the reason for this? It raises one heck of a lot of racket running up and down the streets and I've also noticed an inordinate amount of SMOKE pouring out of the exhaust pipe when they take off from a stop. In my 06 3500 there is a sticker on the driver side sunvisor stating that it is a federal offense to tamper with the exhaust or emission system of the unit. Something about being a violation of a federal noise ordinance. I know when I was living in Texas, (wished I had never left!) whenever the yearly inspection came around the inspector sure checked to see if I had all the equipment on my 97 and 06 or I would not be given an inspection sticker!!
And the fact that when one of these yahoos tears down the street in the middle of the night with the exhaust bellowing away, it sure brings a good night's sleep to an end!!

Most states require a muffler a lot of bypassing this law is because the turbo acts as a muffler and in some states it's allowed because of the vaguely written law that states there must be a baffling device in the exhaust
And there are people (like me) that enjoy hearing my engine working but I don't try to annoy people by blasting my exhaust in quite neighborhoods

Who doesn't like the Bark of a Big block chevy or that Haley? I admit I "lost the Muffler on a few of my RAM's . But I knew that it was only loud when I'd get on it. So when ever I was driving I kept my foot out of it so not to annoy everyone. There are a few of us that don't go out of our way to smoke out the world at every stop sign or wake the neighbors baby. Then there a few that just can't help them selves and ruin a good thing for everyone. My 2013 came with out a muffler but it's got so much emmissions stuff on it it can't make a peep. I miss the old days when there wasn't so much restrictions but I like to breath clean air.... And hear the music playing on the radio.....

Feeling a bit melancholy are we there, DBoyd Downer? Sure, lets start a "Primary Complaint" thread. I'll join in.

My truck has a "loud" muffler on it so it's louder than it was stock and I leave a small cloud of black smoke at times when I take off or pass a slower vehicle but I try not to annoy folks and it's not my purpose to smoke someone out. It's just a byproduct of having my truck the way I like it. I will tell you that I'm saving up to get me an AFC LIve as soon as I can that will cut the smoke without cutting my power.

I have much more of an issue with the youngsters driving by in front of my house in their 4X4 gassers that look like they're all hauling a bed full of lead, with little or no mufflers where you can FEEL every time a cylinder fires, and their stereos blasting so loud it rattles the windows in my house.

There's a Suburban that comes by my house at least three or four times a night that I can hear his "music" from when he gets to the stop sign a half mile down the road until he gets a half mile past my house and I am NOT exaggerating. This is with my windows closed and my TV on. When we have visitors and this guy drives by they start looking around for the freight train that's fixing to run through my house.

Yea, Get off of my lawn! :D

I have to admit, as I age, I'm losing the "feeling" for loud rides. At least something I may occasionally be in for 10-12 hrs a day.

What I don't particularly like is the squirrel farter thump thump mobiles. They sound like an amplified chainsaw.:(

You have all heard the phrase"If it's too Loud you're too old"
Seems like some of us have arrived or maybe "there is a time and place for everything"

Hmmm, I like the quiet comfortable ride of our Honda CRV for trips. When I drive my 94 5.0 Mustang to work, I'm glad it has headers and an off road h-pipe with flowmasters. Yep that's right no cats or other smog equipment just that classic Ford 5.0 Mustang sound as I row thru the gears. I suppose everything has a time and a place as has been stated. I also don't floor my car from stop light to stop light trying to be annoying either

Hey Big Papa, I can relate to what you are saying about the loud music too. We have a town full of "newcomers" who work in the hog slaughterhouse and they do enjoy blasting the neighborhoods!! I have taken down their tag numbers and turned them in, to no avail because the police in this town don't want to "harass" the "newcomers". I am leaving this town as soon as I am no longer needed here to care for family. Think I'll head back to where I was in Ohio or the Texas Gulf Coast.

Back in 2005, in Texas, I bought a slick 1999 3500, six speed, dually. Soon discovered it had straight pipes and I didn't want to bother my retired neighbors, so I found an exhaust system on TDR and fixed the noise problem. Good truck. Traded it in on the 2006 3500. And I think they are right with the saying "if it is too loud, you're too old." I know I sure don't like all the racket like I used to. I guess I had too many years on an old JD two cyl. diesel and also around too many V12 GMC irrigation engines with straight pipe. And then, operating big Cooper Bessemer, Caterpillar, and Ingersoll compressor units for too many years.

I've got two motorcycles with straight pipes both American v-twins that sound great my dodge 2500 lost its muffler on day one my 67 vetted never had muffler since it's rebuild and yes I'm a old fart 70 years
But I can't stand to listen to someone's rap crap blaring from their radio rattling the windows in my vehicle with nothing but boom boom boom it's not music it's just noise

I rarely see smoking diesels in California including commercial rigs. I've got a slightly louder muffler and clean tunes. Works for me and yes I'm old.

That sounds like a nice rig. There's a couple of rigs around town that enjoy setting at the stoplight next to someone in a passenger car then just HAMMERING the throttle and absolutely covering the car and the whole intersection with diesel smoke!! And the cops can't or won't do anything. It concerns me that such activities will bring in the feds and they will shut down the diesel pickup sales.
