What was the reason why dodge or cummins scrapped the VE pump and went with the p7100. Which pump is better and can they be interchanged?

I dont have an answer for the why, but for power, the Ppump is the better-pretty much the best (except CRs are dead even) and yes they can be interchanged. My best guess for the why is probably power, maybe emissions? I think they came with a cat in 94+, so that may have been an issue...

my understanding is the why was for emissions and probably power. as to wich is better id say the ppump hands down can build big power and is just as if not maybe a little more reliable. they are interchangeable but its not cheap a lot of parts have to be changed to make them work

I may be totaly wrong, but on a friends old 91, it looks like the VE pump has a dynamic timing advance so the timing changes as you accelerate. It also looks to have a cold start advance to help aid in cold smoke and combustion. Wouldn't this be better and allow the engine to burn better hence last longer?

I'm not sure about this, but pretty sure the VE's don't have static timing as the p-pumps do. Thats what kinda stinks about the p-pump. As far as I know they are interchangeable, but might need to change injectors maybe?

I never messed with my 1st gen. so I really don't know all that much about them.

you have to change the front gear housing, injectors and lines. they were changed for emissions due to the higher pressure injection which atomizes the fuel better. as far as durability i think the ve is better, do a poll on how many miles on a stock p7100 and stock ve, im sure the ve is more durable and a heck of alot easier to rebuild.

The p pump was used starting in 94 for emissions, the power output for the automatic trucks where the same, 160hp and 400ftlbs, the manuals that got 175hp and 420ftlbs. It supplied higher pressure for better atomization and better burn. It originally was used on the 8. 3l "C" series engine and can flow a lot of fuel. It is a BIG pump that is lubed and cooled by the engine oil. For power and durability it is the best pump so far.

I am not attempting to be argumentative, however, the VE is a good pump but not nearly as durable (in my opinion) as the P-7100. I have seen lot's of silly dealers and independant shops replace p pumps during bad diagnostics. The ve's that I have had experience with made 100 to 200 thousand miles with good results but for all purposes were worn out and needed replacement or just fell apart. I don't recall too many p pumps that have fallen apart at 100 thousand miles. The ve is definitely cheaper to replace but doesn't have the ability to build big hp.

Yes I think injection pressures was the real reason to move to the P-7100. As I recall it delivers around 17,000 psi whereas the VE is approx 10-11,000.

The injection pressures on trucks equipped with the VE pump are approx 3500psi. Trucks with the P7100 inject at approx 7500psi, they are capable of building pressures of up to 17,000psi. The change was primarily for emissions.
