I can go get a brand new '05 QC/SB 4x4 off the lot for $27-29k... why do people ask more than that for used '05's? why do people ask $23-25k for an '03-04 with 60-80k miles?

When I was looking at getting my first cummins I was looking at used as well and it was a waste of time. $30,000 for something with 50-90k and it wasn't even fully loaded. I'm not sure what they are thinking, but you know if trade yours in you definatly won't get what you want out them. Diesels have a high price mark-up value no matter what brand.

Because they feel that they're worth it? What is my 2002 (see signature) worth with only 26K miles in pristine condition, never having been back to the dealer for any warranty (or any other) problems? I doubt anyone would be willing to pay what I think it's worth, but you never know... .

Rusty, that's a totally different story... you can't get an '02 anymore and you've done mods to it...

heck, I'm considering paying $19k for a done up '98 QC SB 4x4...

but we're talking about a bone stock truck that is essentially still in production... a used '05 for more than a new one? how can anyone w/ any intelligence actually "feel that they're worth it"?

My 95 DRW, (see signature) listed at $15,400 on NADA. I sold it for $14,995 without any problem. I sold it so fast that my 05 had not arrived yet. Trucks that are only 2 or 3 years old are harder to sell then older trucks because of all the incentives offered on new trucks. Most people would rather buy it new. People selling there 2 or 3 year old truck are only trying to get Kelly BB or NADA.

but you can't go out and buy a new '95... so the prices are stabilized... but you can go out and buy a new version of what people are trying to sell used... and it's not just the new incentives or whatever... you've been able to get these prices for years...

my buddy got his 04. 5 6sp QC 3500 as soon as they hit the lot... OUT THE DOOR with TT&L for under $31k... I'm sure MSRP was $38-40k

just because people overpay for stuff doesn't mean it's really worth that...

I have wondered that myself, there are trucks for sale for $2k-$3k more than you could get a new one for, it makes no sense. Once you take it off the lot the price drops 15%-20% off the best deal with the highest rebates. For example a new '05 truck that stickers for $45k could probably be bought for $36k or slightly less new from the dealer, so if you want to sell it used it should be around $32k, this would be for a brand new one with low mileage, older and mileage will bring it down more.

I paid an almost new price for my truck when it was 1 yr and 10k miles old. It was a late '03 HO, not available in CA. Plus no one around here stocks 6 speeds, especially Laramies. I also liked the 305/555 as opposed to the 325/600's, so that's what I bought (funny, the guy who sold me the truck called me to tell me he liked his "old" truck better than the new one). I may have paid too much, but I felt that it was worth it.

People can charge high prices if they have the right truck for the right buyer. Some, however, charge too much for a run-of-the-mill truck. They don't sell, so they lower their price eventually. Additonally, you have to start somewhere, 'cuz everyone wants to negotiate.

Those people selling at a high price most likely paid full sticker or close to it. Now they want out and are trying to get what they owe. Just a few percentage of CTD owners come to this website and actually know what they can get the truck for. Most buyers do little to no homework/research on the vehicle they buy. Most go to the dealer get all excited about a new truck and take what the dealer gives 'em. I once was one of those people. Not any more.

Duh... . now that you've said it, I think that you probably hit the nail on the head. I've seen this (and didn't recognize it in this case) for years with RVs. When we were briefly looking at diesel pusher motorhomes, a sharp buyer can get 25%-30% off MSRP of a new unit if he/she is willing to work at it. Yet I looked at 2 year old used units for sale at prices just about equal to what I could buy a new one for, and these poor souls who had paid close to list price for their motorhome couldn't afford to come down on price because of their loan balance. Fortunately for most of them, someone else would come along who didn't know the facts and pay at or close to their asking price.

Guys, Look at the big picture... these things hold their value! Yeah, sure, the price of joining the club is pretty steep. But once you're in, you've got an investment that will hold its value pretty well. Let those goobers that paid full sticker keep right on doin' it. Look at what it does for the market, more specifically for us who really worked deals new. Yeah, it sux if you're trying to work a deal on a used one, but once you're in... baby, you're set.

Judging by what i paid for my truck, and what blue book is on it now, my last year of ownership: (got new '03 last year) 20k wonderful miles and its still books only $2-3k less than what I gave for it. I've never had another vehicle come out like that. Don't know if I could get it, but on paper it looks pretty good. :D

Just went through this with my pop, gettin him his first CTD. He was lookin used for 31-32 ish. His new '05 only cost em 3. 5k more! "The juice was worth the squeeze. " Or somethin like that. :-laf

I'd rather have it this way than what the ferd guys do... There's a '99 Stroke up the road, right around a hunded k, looks in good shape 4x yada yada. $12k and change. I've seen '95s around here for that get snatched up in a matter of hrs, this truck's been there for weeks.

Price is dictated by demand, so until people stop paying those high prices for used trucks, The people selling those used trucks will not lower the price

Keep in mind that perseption(sp) is reality to some people, So they are think the used truck is less expensive and dont bother to check - Never knowing for $1000 more, they can get a new one!

Tomey,

Don't be too aggressive in deflating the used truck market. Some of us need to sell our used ones for a nice price if we're gonna buy one of your new ones! ;) :-laf

the EXACT answer to my rhetorical question! :D

drives me nuts... just because someone overpaid doesn't mean it's worth what they paid! LOL!

sigh...

I would sure like a list of dealers and trucks with all the options for $27k... . Ill take 2. :-laf :-laf :-laf . You must be talking ST 2wd no a/c. :-laf :-laf

my buddy got his fully loaded QC SB 2wd for $28k

another buddy just TODAY bought a QC SB 4x4 fully loaded for under $30k

sorry you guys outside of TX overpay for trucks :(

Forest, JPost is right. I shopped used Harleys for nearly two years and finally bought a new '02 Electra Glide Standard for about the same money most 2-3 year old bikes were advertising for. Same drill for new truck AND who's to say what EGT's that nearly new 20k mile rig has seen? Both my bike and future truck will be long term retirement possesions so going new is in fact the low budget route. Also shop labor rates will quickly make a used rig needing some work get upside down on money. Good luck, JimB.
