Why doesn't D/C build a GREAT trans? The 47RH I have in my truck is a good trans, but with a 90% torque conv. and a better valve body it would be a GREAT trans. Why doesn't D/C build it?

Why make us suffer with a 67% Torque Converter.

Why make us spend thousands of dollars on aftermarket TC's and VB's, when they could build it RIGHT from the facory, and build a LEGEND!

I don't understand company logic. I don't understand why they built such a slush-box.

One would think with the advent of the Duramax/Allison D/C would come up with a Cummins/47RH/DTT combo.

Am I wrong here?

think about it for probably "most" normal owners, the 47rh gets them through the warranty period, then when the trans starts going out in that "old" truck they go in and get a new truck. I mean how many bone stock trucks do you hear of smoking trannys all the time. Yeah, i know it happens, especially if towing heavy, but how many people really tow all that heavy all the time. My guess would be most people who really work their trucks towing heavy all the time by manual trans trucks.

It sucks big time, but the numbers (money) must be in DC's favor, or they wouldn't be sticking us with that pile o junk

While the stock trannys are kinda marginal, I thinks its a balancing act. You install a 91% TC and a VB. But now you need the power to drive it, with good bottom end and not having turbo lag go crazy. Now all of a they have to handle the smoke, and make it emissions legal. And then they have to handle the EGT's, etc. It goes on and on.

My experience as I have bombed my truck, is for every action there is a re-action. When I tweak one thing, a little later I discover it had this side effect, and now I gotta tweak that, etc. Its taken a while to get it all just right. ( still not there yet, getting close though ).

Overall I think its quite a balancing act to create a vehicle that has good response, drivability, power, noise, emissions, smoke and all that and have it in a well rounded package that will fit most the population.

I fried three of those marginal stock transmissions in my 95.

Towing did it. I could not deal with the autos breaking all the time and I had no idea who Bill K was so I went with the 5 speed this time around. Just to loose three 5th gears before I found Standard Transmission. Boy, what i would have paid to be a member of the TDR back then. Always learning something new.

DC negociated with Allison for rights to the 1000 series. They decided to go for it at first and then later declined. Ford did the same thing.

GM is the only current user in the light truck market.

I'm waiting to see when a Mercedes diesel & auto combo is offered in the RAM. I hope they offer a diesel in the 1500 series and the auto across the board.
