Allow me a brief venting...

Why is it that 80% of the ricers I see with body kits have failed to paint the kits before installation? I don't understand. They're either plain white or primer gray. Are these people SO EXCITED when they get the kit in the mail that they just absolutely cannot wait to install them (for the inevitable 80 hp gain) and slap 'em on there that night!?

I just don't get it. Anyone have any insight? I'd love to ask one some day, but no one I know is a ricer.

Maybe it's the same as why American Airlines doesn"t paint thier planes, if they don't waste the weight of paint they can run an extra speaker-light bulb-ex. tip without exceeding max gvw.

I like it when you have the body kit on a car that is painted 4 different colors.

Good one, I forgot about the multi-colored jobs.

I suppose Torque This is right... lack of funds. But if you're so strapped that you can't afford to paint the kit, why buy the kit in the first place? Furthermore, why buy the stupid kit when you can save the cash either for a mod that has real performance value, or for a car with better performance than a 92 Saturn?

But I guess if you're smart enough to ask yourself those questions, you're probably not a ricer. [At least, not the cheap ricer... there are some ricers out there with some pretty amazing performance]

it's a rice thing, you wouldn't understand

I hear you on this one Ryan. How about the one that are all cracked up with the body kit held up with bailing wire and duct tape?

I guess one of the reasons they don't paint the carbon fiber panels is to show them off but I think a dark carbon fiber hood on a light colored car looks ugly.

Why bother?

Well, I'm implying it looks like total crapola.

It's also nice when they don't take the time to align them properly, or even to cut out the driving light holes. The car ends up looking like a very unfinished model kit. Sometimes I do enjoy trying to guess what make/model car it is, it's been so butchered.

Forgot to mention the guy who lives next door to me...

Yesterday he is trying to start the car, battery very weak, but strong enough to play the stereo... next thing your hear is just clicking, out comes the jumper pack, still playing the stereo, still won't start... just had to sit back and laugh...

I also know of someone who paid $800 for an old 70's 280z. The car is falling apart, BUT...

It has $4500 dollars worth of electronics, $6000 for tires and rims (spinners), and a custom interior that set him back mucho $$$$$$$$... WHY?????

7 words. A million issues. :-laf

Some day I just want to corner one of these guys and get them to admit that everything they do to their cars is pure vanity. Problem is, I think they really do believe things like "yellow = fast" and "stickers add horsepower", because I see them driving around in traffic like dingbats.

It's the same reason why we bomb our trucks... . because we want to. Granted, I have nothing bombed, but I can understand where they're coming from. It's what they're into. Just like our trucks- stacks, 2x the turbos, gauges, exhausts, H2 wheels, whatever floats our boat, and we all can justify it somehow... mainly because we like it.

But hey, you can't fault 'em for trying. Girls like the stereos. They like the wheels. They like the 8" tach face with the 4" beacon shift light. And the reason they can't get 'em painted is that they're busy spending their money trying to get the dang thing to pass smog inspections... the true diehards keep the spare/stock engine and have to reinstall it everytime the smog inspection comes due... .

Ahhh screw it. For the most part you're right. They're just morons doing a fad I don't understand.

My opinion on this is that 90% of the guys that are ricers do not know a thing about wrenching. I see it all the time when you go to the local pep boys or auto zone (which I try to avoid). They are more into bling than performance. Who cares that their spark plugs are so filed that their car runs like dog poo and their car leaks more oil than our cummins takes. But what they do care about is the neon lights, strobe headlights, and lambo doors give them more a racer/rockstar image. I wish more people would be into function over form instead of the opposite. I always like the saying "chrome don't get ya home".

If they painted the car kit... ... They would have to repaint them because of the damage done at the first speed bump. :{ :{ :{ :{ :{

I can accept people wanting to do things purely for looks. It's their perogative. However, ricers with unpainted/wrong color/multi-color body kits cannot possibly be into it "for looks". There simply must be something else going on here.

How can you spend $500 or more on something that you think looks nice, then just slap it on the car without painting it properly so it ends up looking like complete junk!? Or am I wrong - do people actually find the primer look appealing?

I have been seeing more and more primer-only cars driving around... maybe it's the "new look"?

I guess I was implying that between the quality of the install and the likelyhood of damage, etc. , why bother? It's still a ricer no matter what color you paint it.

Maybe they figure they're going to be in the body shop before long and let them deal with it then.
