Will fuel prices dictate you selling your CTD?

Ok guys, there isn't a forum for REALLY DUMB QUESTIONS so I'm putting this here. Kinda funny... A friend was in my truck (932 mi to 100K!!!!!) tonight and asked the question. I couldn't answer it and that ticked me off. So have at it. What makes that sound we love so much?

the compression ratio is so high in these motors thats what gives it the diesel knocking sound that we all love its the fuel being fired from heat and compression... or if you have a chevy 350 you get the same noise on a cold start! :-laf im sure others will chime in and correct me if im wrong

I agree with Tom. Sudden pressure rise in the cylinder as combustion occurs causes a loud "hammer" noise. Trucks with pilot injection (small combustion event prior to the main event) are quieter because the pressure rise is more gradual.

So why's the Ferd 7. 3 sound like it's got bolts loose & the Chevy 6. 5 sounds like a Ferd underwater?

I dunno... Cummins just sounds "right"

My wife would roll her eyes if she read this LOL

must have something to do with the v8 design? inline engine design is the way to go in a diesel IMO. .

ITs the Injectors them selves ..... if you was to set an injector off in a vise it sounds like a . 22 going off . now times that by 6 and bam,,bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, it tends to get a bit noisy.

As for the power joke they have electronic fired injectors and there not as loud

And the new common rails injectors open a little bit electronicly then open all the way with pressure

By the way, some people just don't have an appreciation for the beautiful sound of the Cummins. Yesterday at the fuel pump, a guy in a Duramax muttered, ''I thought MY diesel was noisy'', as I turned my engine OFF. Wasn't even worthy of a reply.

Obviously the guy was an unwashed (in #2) heathen, unconverted by the Gospel according to Clessie! :-laf

straight pipe exhuast, keeping the RPM's below 1600 as much as possible feathering the throttle in a downtown setting gets remarks like "damn the truck is loud"... Some times I ponder 5/5 and WOT in 3rd and 4th on these streets durning the day. But I fear my own ears with the windows down when the sound bounces off buildings 20 feet either side of ya.

try riding in a 6. 0 litre with a straight pipe on a long trip. You would hate it more and more with all the turbo sound even though they top out on boost at 22psi.

Sometimes I miss the sound of my old '01. 5 that had a 4" exhaust and practically no muffler. Whenever we'd go through a tunnel or were right next to a wall or something, my sons would always say "floor it dad". Now, we just enjoy the sound of the turbo through the aFe. That's pretty cool too.

a lot of the noise actually comes from the injection pump too

that is true. my truck sounds like a 12v until i hit the throttle on the first start of the day.

In is really the price of diesel fule that causes the rattle - - - and fuel price is way up and will stay up, and because of that, you are more aware of the noise due to the headache caused by the out go of $$$$.

Hey all - - - I've got some oceanfront property for sale in Ariz... ... ... ...

Best wishes, Denny
