Looking for a specific type of shop stool

Guys,

Surfed the 'ole YouTube the other day and I seen several old school stationary engines running at various festivals etc. So found this one showing a starting drill for a Fairbanks Morse and they have to spot the crank at a position, then try to start it with compressed air.

He's using a BAR inserted into the flywheel to rotate the engine, Is this the origin of the Barring tool name for our Cummins?

Other ideas?

Happy Sunday,

Gary

Just tried to add 2+2, never did understand the name. Maybe some old fart like Mike W. has the skinny.

How about starting engines with a bang!

Or a tractor too with an early glowplug system too.

Dang, you found some oldies, cool! This is what I grew up with to pump water. The red McCormick in the foreground. When we grew up enough (about 11) to start and install the v-belt while it was running, we were considered grown up:) Note the drive pulley on the right side, it does not line up with the crankshaft center line. They had a built in gear box to reduce speed and increase power. We would roll the v-belt off before starting (too hard to crank the engine and pump jack at the same time) then after it was running we would flip the belt back on the pulley:eek: Now days, parents would be charged with child abuse to allow this dangerous duty but it was all in a days work for us kids growing up. The first time or two of doing it, it would stand your hair on end:-laf

Nick,

Seen quite a few stationary engine displays but just a picture taker, never had hands on time with any.

I can recommend two locations one in SW PA http://www.ncrvfc.com/jubilee.html New Centerville VFD holds a really down home style festival and they have several massive stationary engines on display and running in buildings. The other one I've only been to one time in NC
this video DOES NOT show the collection of stationary engines in the park or the range of stuff that shows up for the festival but it does show the cotton press. When we were there they were running a steam shovel, yes, steam.

Also found a video showing starting a Corsair with a shotgun type shell, but this video shows a Wildcat startup. A comment that the shell didn't power the pistons with the shell, it drove something more along the lines of an compressed piston air starter drive. Here it is and the explanation is the first comment.
