A curiosity..
Buddy and I were towing our TT's and stopped at a rest stop. We left our engines running and when we stood in front of our trucks listening to the engines. His 06 auto was clearly louder and had more higher pitch "diesel" noises than my 03.
His truck is bone stock with 22K on it, mine is as shown in my signature.
I know there were a lot of changes in 06 to address NVH so why is his eng noisier? Is my SmJr doing something at idle?

I'm interested in hearing the brain-trusts thoughts.

Scott

IIRC they added another injection event on the compression stroke which should of made it less noisy. They also passive ergr. I have a customer with 2005 that is noisy as my Mule(96). Which mite mean something isn't right.

The 3rd event is not active at idle, only when load determines it is needed. Same with the in-cylinder EGR, that won't effect anything at an idle as there is no boost or DP to make it work.

Timing on a 600 engine was reduced further than a stock 03 engine for emissions. An 03 with a Smarty runs more timing than a stock 06. The fueling program was changed quite a bit even at idle on the 600 series engines. They always seemed a lot more prone to injector ratte even stock than the 305's.

There are several things that cna make a stock engine noisy, injectors and CP-3 are the two main ones. An 06 with 22k miles obviously doe snot see a lot of use. Could be injectors gummed up or a bad set. MY06 was a transiton year on injector manufacture and they just seemed to have a lot mor eporblems in that 1 year than ll the others. The QC when moving production facilities wasn't quite up to par I believe.

Could be just the nature of that truck, or, he needs a heavy dose of cleaner\lube in the fuel and drive the snot out of it for a while. Carbon build up on the tips will cause many weird noises that disappear once it is worked hard.

That makes lots of sense Cerb. Up until recently the truck was used mostly to run errands and tow a heavy boat a couple of hundred miles a year. He finally has a TT but it still only weighs about 7500 lbs and he only rarely takes it over the mountains where it would get any real workout at all.

Our families are taking another trip in two weeks, this time over the mountains. I'll let him know what you said about the cleaner and giving it a workout.
Would Power service or Seafoam (or something else) be a good choice?

Thanks,
Scott

EDIT: Friend says he has a case of Stanadyne - he'll probably use that.

I use a mixture of Power Service and 2 stroke oil, has worked well for +200k. Others will probably work just as well. The idea is to treat the crappy ULSD we have and keep the gunk is leaves clenaed out of the fuel system.

Hopefully he'll heed my advice and try the additive. He stopped using it because it (and several other additives) cause the FF in his other ride (Kenworth w/8.3 Cummins) to clog in as little as 3000 miles. But that's for another forum.

LOL, if it clogged the fuel filter the whole system is sorely in need of cleaning. ULSD is nasty in the respect it leaves deposits that can really foul things. It may take a couple filters to get it cleaned out.

Yea, it's an odd case. His Kenworth has plugged the filter in 3K since it was new - if he uses additive. The fuel tank is aluminum so you can see in it pretty good. In the beginning it was perfectly clean (but still clogged filters) but now it has a blanket of black fuzzy looking junk on the inside. He knows he needs to clean it up but generally has better things to do LOL.

You sure he doesn't have algae or some other bacteria in his tank?

Of the Kenworth or the Dodge?
The Dodge runs perfectly - just a bit noisy. I suppose it could have something in the tank but it doesn't clog filters.

The Kenworth has a nasty layer of something in the tank. Thing is, it clogged it's very first filter when new at only 1k miles. It clogged it several more times in short order before he stopped using additives and then it settled down to clogging them every 3K. It now has about 112000 on it.

On a side note, I've known this fellow since we were 5 y/o (both now 53). During that time we raced everything we had; trikes, wagons, bicycles, cars, motor cycles, and I probably left something out. (haven't raced trucks. Yet.)
Next weekend we'll set off with our families and our same sized travel trailers and head over the local pass. His truck is all stock, mine has the SmJr@100HP.
