OK. This will be my second Cummins. I am amazed at how loud the 24V Cummins is. Sure, its got great power/acceleration but it really is LOUD. Does anyone know why or how to make it less noisy?

A few months back there was a thread about an insulation kit that covered the engine, injection pump, etc. Wonder what happened to it?

Supposedly its the fuel pump on the ISB-least that's what I've been told... not sure how it makes the rig louder, but told that was what did it. Geno's has an engine blanket that some guys are just raving about--might be worth a search of prior posts... .

From What I've seen... real world...

The problem is the REDICULOUS TIMING DODGE GIVES US FROM THE FACTORY!!!!

Change the timing and listen... . MUCHO differant.

BTW. . choose your own way to adjust the timing.
Some solutions are truly. . AHEMmmm... . "Plug And Play. "

In the last century, Cummins told Chrysler the 24v would be quieter than the 12v. They said great! We can cheat on insulation! We'll save millions! Once again, the bean counters rake the consumer.

$BANK$RUPTED them's turbo horsies.

RamBill, that noise is music to my ears. Took the muffler and resonator off my 2001. Enhanced the turbo whistle even more than after I had removed the silencer ring.

Read the thread on the insulation as it was being tossed back and forth. It was just last month that the last post to it was made. It was titled something like "insulation product at Detroit show. " Checked it out and the stuff is pricey if your working in Cdn $.

I learned about this with my 98 24V.
The ECM prgram that DC put into these trucks has the timing running 3. 6 degrees retarded.
When I had the TST rewritten ECM program on my 98', it was a lot quieter since the timing was advanced instead.

I believe altering the timing, altering the fuel delivery, altering the exhaust, altering the air intake, and altering everything else equals... . BOMBING!!!

Somebody's gotta say it.
It's all those extra valves clattering around in there. Back to the 12 valve world I go #ad

I think my 24 valve is way quieter than my 12 valve at 75mph,its louder at idle but I'm not there much. Music to my ears, doesn't have that anemic split shot sound.

The timing does seem to have alot to do w/ it. The VA made mine quieter. But then it seemed to get a little quieter w/ injectors too.

My 99 was louder then my 2001. When I picked my 01 up I had just gotten out of my 99. The salesman started my new trusk and thet is the first thing I noticed. Drove it home and the wife mentioned how much quieter it was. The 99 had a lot of problems and I wonder if I still had it if I wouldn't have engine problems down the road. Well I'll never know.
