Here is why you want a noisy diesel.



From an engineering standpoint, the diesel thermodynamic cycle is not as efficient as the gasoline (Otto) cycle. This is because in the diesel cycle, heat is added at constant pressure (when the injector sprays, the piston is on its way down) instead of at constant volume ias in a spark ignition engine where the piston is stationary and the heat is added all at once.



Diesels make up for this inefficiency by having much higher compression ratios and a much more precise fuel delivery system. However, diesel engineers make every attempt to have the heat added to the diesel cycle at constant volume like a spark ignition engine, thereby increasing its thermodynamic efficiency.



The most efficient diesels are noisy because the engineering tries to duplicate the Otto cycle by injecting very rapicly and adding heat at constant volume. This is the optimum scenario for timing and efficiency and makes lots of noise. The engine must be constructed very strong because there are almost catastrophic events taking place above the piston. Really well built diesels like the Cummins and Cats are very capable of dealing with these pressures. To be sure, the limiting factors for some diesels involve cylinder pressures, but good engineering like we have with the Cummins can deal with it.



Those of you that believe that pilot injection and the other changes are for meeting emissions standards are correct.



If you really think quieter is better, I have a bridge in Brooklyn that you need to buy.

low noise at idle is quite alright. the pilot injection will be nice on the new cummins engines at idle. you will be able to have a conversation [like drive-thru] without shutting the engine off. does the pilot injection on the new cummins run all the way to the governor? or does it shut off at like 2,500rpm kinda like the duramax? and someone like edge or someone else will come out with a box that will up the power and have a pilot injection sequence shut off positon...





dang, don't even own one yet, but the ideas to bomb the future 2004 of mine are rolling in...
 
As far as *I* am concerned, there's LOTS more to my personal enjoyment of my Dodge/Cummins than the ability to make an order at a drive-thru window with my engine running!:(



If I wanted REAL "technology" and quiet, I'd get one of those neat EPA electric vehicles...



I ask in my sig below "is THIS the last of the REAL diesels from DC?" - and I'm dead serious! Yeah, the newer stuff coming out promise lower noise, lower emissions - and a whole gut-full of "technology" - but WHAT do we LOSE in the bargain?



Will the owner of the new technology diesel still get 400-500 or more THOUSANDS of reliable and TOTALLY economical miles from the engine before it's even necessary to take the heads or pan off? AND then, with an overhaul, go on for ANOTHER similar distance - over a MILLION miles with continued reliability and economy?



I'll believe it when I see it...



I truly love the way my new '02 HO 6-speed will idle away from a stoplite in second gear with my foot completely off the throttle - and the way we literally IDLED up a LONG 10% canyon grade in 3rd gear (4th gear was too fast for us to enjoy the scenery) - again with my foot completely off the throttle as we admired the mountain scenery - will the "new technology" still do that?



I enjoy my truck as much for its CHARACTER and PERSONALITY as I do its "technology" - and sure wouldn't trade its low down, gut pulling torque and power merely for a bit more quiet, while having to accept a high-reving gas-engine look-alike to accomplish that goal...



Yeah - as far as *I* am concerned:



REAL TRUCKS RATTLE, KNOCK and PULL LIKE A S. O. B. !:p ;) :D

Unfortunately, I still don't have my truck. I was going to finally make the decision to buy one once the news was out about the 2003's, but finances painted a different picture. Althought I do like the new design, except for the cheap looking dash, I was completely turned off by the reduced engine compartment!!! And I do have to admit, I LIKE THE SOUND OF A REAL DIESEL!!!



So here's my request to all of you Dodge people out there in diesel land. Keep your trucks in top condition, because when I am financially able to buy my mine, it's going to be a used one, not the new 2003.
