First and foremost, Cummins in the only way to go. Of course, we're a bit bias around here :-laf I did some pretty heavy research myself before I decided on which mfg to go with. Didn't go Chevy Duramax because from what I've read and owners I was able to find, although the Allison transmission is a big positive, the motor itself was problematic. Owners reported all sorts of gremlins. Inside the cab, the dash looks like the same one they've been putting in trucks for the past 10 years. Everything looked dated to me. The Powerstroke came in second (behind the Cummins). Lots of 'em out there. The ones I priced were considerably higher in price than the Dodge and the Cummins reports better fuel economy. I'm pleased as hell with my truck. These 3rd gen Dodges are the latest and greatest in technology. The automatic transmission 48re is an improvement over the 47re which wasn't a bad transmission to begin with. Do some research on your own, test drive and shop. Your son will be joining this board when you come to your final conclusion :)

Have your son go read some of the turd(ford) boards and he will see first hand how bad off those poor guys are. As far as the chevy goes that allison transmission isnt all that. The durajunks are defueled at take off and wot because the allison cant handle the power. Chevy says 590 foot pounds of torque... what they dont tell you is that you can only use 520 pounds. :--)

IMHO, the 3rd gens have much better brakes, steering, power, bigger doors on quad cabs, quieter engines, better frame, and better dashes. Please keep in mind this is just my opinion. I had an '01. 5 before, so that's how I came to my conclusion.

Why Dodge over others? Cummins. :D

If your son has to have a Ford..... God have mercy on his sole. Then by all means get the 7. 3 and stay away from that crappy 6. 0. The Fire Dept that I work for has 9 brand new F450 Medic Units with the 6. 0 and not one of them can stay running for longer than a day... Seriously! Most break down on the return trip from the local Ford dealership. Some have had tattle tell boxes on them for weeks to catch the codes because Ford has no idea whats happening... About 10 of us have CTD ranging in all years and we all just point and laugh :-laf
