Why use GMT time?

Using the GMT is confusing when trying to determine when someone posted their post. Why not just use Eastern Standard Time as a reference point?

Click on user control panel in the buttons at the top and then click on edit options. Towards the bottom there is a field where you enter what time zone you are in. Then the times will be in your local time wherever you are. The reason it's in GMT is because we have users worldwide.
