Could someone tell me why we have so many differences as too how much oil is needed to fill the crankcase to the full mark on the 98. 5-02 trucks? I am positive mine is full after ten qts. (inc. filter) Just changed the oil, put in nine qts. Drove to a level spot,(restaurant) Let it sit until we came out, checked oil, a qt. low. Put in a qt. at home. Couple days later, same restaurant, oil check, just over the full mark.

Some of you fellows say it needs too be eleven qt. , next guy says his takes twelve qt. ?????

I think you MUST be on a level spot and MUST shut down the truck for at least ten min. before you can get a accurate reading.

Your opinion?????

I have always put in a total of 11 quarts when I change the oil and filter. 3/4 of a quart in the filter and the other 10 1/4 in the crank. Shes full every time. ;)

The first gen trucks take 12 qts total. For the second gen's the oil pan was tweaked to fit the new truck. These require 11 qts total.

Thomas, I found your reply too be quite interesting. After reading it I went to the web site on 'incorrect dip sticks'. I checked mine, and DO have the correct number.

I think I will still put in the 10qt. as I would rather have it a qt. low rather than have it two qts. over full.

Thanks guys.

Do you start it for a few seconds after the oil change to let the oil get into the filter? Never heard of anyone putting in 10qts. Heard of lots of guys running 12... .

Mine takes 10. 5 quarts . With ten quarts I fill the filter and the engine.

Let it run five minutes. Shut if off 10. Voilà it takes half quart to get it to the full mark, every time.

Maybe it's just because the Cummins has a personality? Not an anonimous V-8 aluminium engine... . :-laf
